A member of the "fake Spanish coins" Facebook group shared this picture, taken in Guatemala of locally made crude fakes. Besides the fake cobs and peso coins, the surprising thing are the late 1800's 1/4 real coins (the tiny ones). These are common and genuine ones can be purchased for just a few dollars. It's the first time I have seen fakes of these. The cobs look a lot like the ones we occasionally see people ask about here, who purchased them thinking they were genuine.
Exactly, and judging by the other items seen in the photo this is likely a novelty shop for tourists.
One stop shopping . You're right about the 1/4 reales as my kid bought a couple off some people who worked with them when he went to Guatemala to help dig some wells during college .
Don't you hate the level of counterfeits these days? I can see why many would be fooled in getting one of such.
Well, that's actually a break and will make them easier to detect. Those Chinese fakes I have seen are good coin silver and really insidious.
Unfortunately, there are different counterfeits in quality, age and/or time of manufacturing. Easy or difficult to trace. More and more nowadays
