As I am done with modern U.S. coins except for a few upgrades, I was wondering if anyone has done any dealings with long time NN dealer Jim Long. It appears he has some decent prices. I am delving into Bust Halves after getting my 1827 on vacation. It is a collection I would like to pursue. Jim goes under the moniker of JEL Coins. Any help is much appreciated. Any other dealers you might have worked with on Bust Halves also welcome. Thank you.
I’ve dealt with Jim Long sporadically for many years & have enjoyed the experience. If you’re curious about a coin, I’ve found him reasonably forthcoming with phone descriptions, etc. He’s a long-time presence at local coin shows here in the Balto-Wash-Northern Virginia area (& presumably further north). In person he comes across as knowledgeable, professional — and a canny, engaging guy to pass the time with. (In addition to bust halves, he also seems to have a particular interest in early US copper.) My own bust half accumulation (186 & counting) features a number from Jim as well as David Kahn, Brian Greer, the usual-suspect auction houses (esp. Great Collections) and, notably, the now-retired Stu Keen — as well as a great number of pleasant finds spread across three continents. And, if you haven’t already, get yourself a guide book to the series! I use Overton/3rd ed. but there are others out there which have their own enthusiasts. Get your dealer contacts to talk about their favorites.
Thanks so very much for your reply. I too, noticed his large copper cent offerings and I'm also tempted to fill some empty spots. Some of the Bustie's seem pleasingly priced even if they are the more common dates. I'm looking to stay in the very fine range for as many as possible. Really appreciate your response. Thanks again. Tom
I have dealt with Jim a few times, but only with early copper. I have no complaints (except I didn't have enough money)
