hi, does this look like an error coin or just really really dirty

to me, it looks like the plating was left out

EDIT: the scans doesn't really show the quarter clear... there are like diagonal lines going from north west to south east on the front (obverse? :p ) of the quarter... i think you can see a bit of the lines i'm talking about around the neck on the picter but in person you can see those lines covering the entire front side of the quarter, also you can see them a lot sharper and more clear in person

Alright...this could be a plated coin and worth $0.25...but to be able to find out what it is and IF it is missing the clad layer (then it might be worth more) we would need the weight.

If you have a coin dealer in your town take it to him and have him take a look at it...

Here is a website of a "Big Time" error dealer....

Let us know what the weight is.

Probably a case of mint discoloration. This is sometimes accompanied by closely spaced parallel lines, streaks, or striations. The cause of both the color and the lines is unknown.

I've pulled coins like this from beaches when metal detecting. Did you find this in circulation, or in an unopened roll?

    circulation

edit: if it was from an unopened roll it would be no doubt an error right

You can find damaged coins in rolls and in mint-sewn bags. Post-strike mint damage is a common and well-known phenomenon. Bent, crushed, gouged, and scraped coins do come out of mint-sewn bags. Post-strike discoloration is equally likely.

Looks like the ones I pull from Sandboxes at the playgrounds and I use em for change. They look like that after only a week outside....
