Hey all, So while browsing sleeze-bay looking at various coins from egypt, as I have alot of interest in Egyptian history and mythology I saw some older silver coins that sorta caught my eye, I put them in my watch list and a few days later I got an offer from the seller for a discount. I won't say what I paid yet. I know next to nothing about these, I did some research just to see if they circulated in Egypt at all and it appears they did just based on when the Ottoman Empire controlled the area. These are listed as Silver Para coins, ottoman empire. I get 4 of them at random, authenticity guaranteed, no holes, good condition. I'm not expecting much but for the price I thought it was pretty cool and I dont' own anything this old. So - can anyone educate me on these? My guess, judging from the pile is there's more than 1 type there but I'm not really sure the era (they don't list years). Just curious for any info/history on these.
Here is a bit of info. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=reading ottoman coins
The one at the bottom center-left (with the rectangle-looking mark) is dated AH 1203, which corresponds to October 1788-September 1789. The one on the bottom far right looks like 1201, or AD Oct 24, 1786-Oct 12, 1787.
Thanks Neal! That gives me an idea of the time period these coins may be from. I'm quite interested to learn more about where these circulated, when they were in use, etc. I was able to find the one with the rectangle mark on Numista so I got some more information that way.
The obverse toughra is actually a monogram of the sultan's name. The reverse includes the sultan's accession year, 1203 (١٢٠٣ ), and at top, the regnal year (1 or 2:digits). The mint names where visible, are Misr (مصر "Egypt") and Islambul (اسلامبول i.e. Istanbul/ Constantinople). https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=24630 https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=1428
