It's not a very expensive coin, just over $10. There was free shipping, but he sent the wrong freakin' coin. I should have read his return policy more closely. He says he'll refund or send the correct coin but I need to pay return postage. I can't help but think that I shouldn't have to pay return postage for a mistake that he made. So do I suck it up as an inexpensive "caveat emptor" lesson for me or do I push for return postage?
I wouldn't pay a cent to correct their mistake. Does their return policy say that in case of seller sending wrong coin, buyer has to pay? I don't think so.
I've done that a few times in the past. Just send a message about his mistake and politely ask him to refund your shipping. If he doesn't, then leave the appropriate feedback. Simple.
I agree. OP, you are in the driver's seat here. If the seller says he won't pay return shipping, well, you never received your item, right? So, in my mind, you never received your item so you are within your rights to file a claim against this seller and get your money back. If he is refusing to pay return shipping, then you just keep the wrong coin he sent. You are being a nice person by sending him back the wrong coin and giving him the chance to fix his mess. Please continue to be a nice guy, I would hope we all would be, but in no way would I say this mess up should cost you one red cent extra. The seller is lucky you are a nice person to begin with, because this is TWO sales he is losing if not.
Actually, this is against eBay policy. If you send a message giving the "threat" of negative or neutral fb, then you violated policy and eBay can/will remove it.
Better yet: Send them back a wrong coin, not the one you received from them. Then ask them to pay for return shipping.
As an eBay seller, I would personally appreciate the opportunity to correct an honest mistake without a case being opened. Opened cases affect your "defect rate" and as a result, Top Rated Seller status and fee discounts. Just a thought... EDIT: If I made this mistake I would pay the return shipping with no questions asked. My mistake should cost ME money, not you.
I just went through a SNAD case back in July and I paid the return shipping. Perhaps I should have read the fine print better:
Thanks for the idea. I haven't seriously sold on eBay for quite some time. I will use that route if this ever happens again. ("What? On Ebay? I'm sure this will never happen again" ;0) )
Thank you all for the input. I followed your advice and he did the right thing and sent me a pre-paid return label.
Unfortunately for sellers, many routes through eBay will automatically result in a case being opened. When you attempt to "contact seller" on an item you have purchased, eBay requests a reason. In this case, should you choose "Item not as described", it will automatically open a case, even if that was not the buyer's intention in making contact with the seller.
Did you try contacting the seller, before you even posted here?? To err is human, why not try giving the seller the benefit of the doubt, before venting online??
I agree that the seller needs to make his mistake right. But, before you file a claim or leave feedback, contact the seller and give him a chance to fix it first. Chances are good that it's an honest mistake and that the seller will do the right thing. If he doesn't, then you can fall back on the filing a claim and leaving feedback option.
