Has anyone here ever been successful in matching their duplicate star note with it's match? If so how long did it take for your match to come along?

Asking mostly so I can learn a little something here.... Aren't the star notes replacement notes for ones that had an issue during printing? If that's the case would it even be possible to match the notes up?

@meandyou4ever0 hope you don't mind a tiny hijack of your thread.... your question got me wondering about it.

The BEP always prints a certain percentage of star notes based on the size of the runs that are planned for any specific year. Problem notes during printing are replaced with star notes. Any leftover star notes are placed into general circulation. If you are very very lucky, you can get a full strap of star notes from your bank. They are available on eBay.

By accident, the Fort Worth and Washington, DC BEP facilities both ran a number of runs of star notes. Therefore, there are star notes with the exact same serial numbers with the only difference being where they were printed.

These duplicates were for 2013 New York (B) notes and are a limited to the following serial number ranges: B00000001 through B00250000; B03200001 through B06400000, and B06400001 through B09600000.

I believe only three or four matched pairs have been documented so far.

Your chances of finding a matched pair are astronomical. But keep looking, it doesn't cost anything to look. Certified matched pairs have sold for tens of thousands of dollars (depending on their rating).

I’ve never matched them but I do have a $1.00 and a $5.00 notes from the same year of printing with the same serial number. Unfortunately I have no photos of it.

    Steve,

I really have no plans, for now they are trophys for taking a gamble on collecting these notes when their existence was only a rumor and a lot of spare time spent looking for mates. I don’t look as much now as I used to because I have been working on a bigger dream of mine but still do search every so often.

I searched for a match for a long time just wondering if someone else was doing the same. Then health issues caused me to stop for nearly 3 years. If it had not been for Mr Winograd and Mr. Zegers I may have stopped all together.

I have a little over a thousand of the notes within the duplicate range with over 700 of them uncirculated. The first pair I matched over 2 years ago (closer to three now) with another collector who was the very first to make a match of these notes. I don't know him personally, but he is a very generous guy who I would like to meet in person sometime.

I have an uncirculated 100 pack of these notes that I acquired in 2017. I made three matches that all came from that same pack. Two of those are pictured above, the third I'm negotiating for. The pack I bought off of a guy in Pennsylvania. The first match to those notes, came from Washington State, the second match came from South Carolina, and the third is in Indiana. Just that bit of history is kinda cool.

For the third pair, i had bought a 100 pack of these notes from a bank teller, again in 2017, and matched one of those with a person in Illinois last fall. I have met a great deal of very nice people who collect currency on this journey, and have also met a couple not so nice but it has been fun in either case.

I posted my note on Project 2013 B
That is the only place I know to try, can you point me in a different direction for a match?

For now that is the best if you just want to wait out until someone else post theirs or sees yours posted. There are quite a few collectors of these notes that haven't posted their serial numbers anywhere, but they do regularly check that site for mates. There are a couple of Facebook groups on these but not sure if all get posted to that site.

Actively searching the for sale listings on eBay, Esty, MA Shops, Mercari and any and all auction sites is another good way to find a match. This is the cheapest way as well because if you find a mate to yours, you already know the other note is for sale and at what price. There has been a lot of hype coming from the creators of the Project 2013 B site just to drum up traffic to their site. It has also instilled a lot of grand dreams of prosperity that are false. Because of this, many seasoned collectors do not trust them and will not post there. Another reason is the creator/admin isn't in the US.

Just a little advice: spend a weekend going through every listing of every for sale/auction site you can find starting with those listings that are ending first. If you do that, then you only have to check the "Newly Added" listings everyday. when I first started this journey, there would sometimes be several hundred new listings posted everyday. That is no longer the case, but there are the occasional collection of 40 or 50 that gets listed.

I just recently heard about this, why are they selling for so much on feebay,? I'm lost lol. I have B03607681 checked it out on star note lookup and it asks if it was printed in Fw or DC mine was printed in fw then it goes on and asks if it has a certain type of star. I haven't gone through currency for quite some time so what's the deal.

I don't know about the certain type of star. I only know about the duplicates. I'm sure someone here has that answer for you tho.

How did you come in contact with the 1st guy you made a match with? Or can you put me in contact with him?

Only the "B" (New York Fed) 2013 star notes have duplicates, and only in certain ranges. The ranges are:
    B00000001* through B00250000*
    B03200001* through B06400000*
    B06400001* through B09600000*
Duplicates were printed in DC and Fort Worth.

I made contact with the first guy through Mr. Karol Winograd. He was one of the original founders of the 2013B Project. He also helped me with the second one, but he has since retired from the project.
