Ok so are the direct fit air tite holders with no black ring insert smaller than the air tite holder with the black ring, this might be a dumb question but just curious. Say you have 2 quarters, you want one in a direct fit and one in the ring type.

    Quarter A- Direct Fit
    Quarter B- Ring type

    Which holder is bigger?

    Thanks.

The ring type is bigger and it provides a neat backdrop for a special coin.

Gee, I thought they were the same size. Do you mean that I filed the edges down on all of my half dollars to make them fit, and it was all for nothing?!!!

One word of caution........About 10 years ago, I purchased the AirTites with the black accent ring for 30 Morgan dollars. Three years later, I removed one of them to take some photos, and I discovered that the edge of the Morgan had turned completely black. When I checked the others, all of them had turned black. I sent them in to NCS for conservation along with one of the rings for them to examine. NCS was unable to come up with a cause for this.

Maybe the early accent rings had some sort of die or chemical that reacted with the silver. I don't know. I mention this because if there are any of you using the black accent rings, I'd suggest that you check your coins from time to time just to make sure this doesn't happen to your coins.

I've had problems with the rings too, so I stick to direct fits. The outside diameter of either holder is the same size

Never had a problem with any clad or silver coins in Air-Tite Holders. I don't collect much copper so I can't talk to that metal. Gold has not been a problem in these ring type holders either. Direct fit holders don't have the cushion to protect your coin from the edges so I suppose there is some slight risk of scratching a coin if you are accident prone or clumsy with handling coins.

This topic comes up a lot and is often shot down for lack of proof the rings caused a problem, precisely as Chris said, even NCS couldn't determine the reason... and it is prudent to check on your coins in ANY holder on occasion to catch any changes over time. There are several threads in the past year alone where this has been discussed. The search tool is still updating, so I was unable to locate those threads this weekend for our reference to previous discussion.

    From the manufacturer's web page:

    FYI

Modern coins (say post 1900) fit in direct-fit airtites because their diameter is consistent.

Earlier than than about 1850 and the ones with the ring become necessary because of the inconsistent diameter.

So guys, since black rings leave a black trail as chris said, what about the white rings?

Never had any trailing effects on my coins Hunt.

There are also red, green, and blue rings in addition to the black and white.

I dont know though, chris makes a good point, 3 years down the road i dont want my coins with black, and red blue and green are only for larger silver dollars, so what about white?

I have an air-tite w/black accent ring that I use to put a silver art round in and so far I have not noticed any effects on the silver art round but I will keep a lookout for any changes on the edges of the art round. I have not had that silver art round in that air-tite for very long (about 3 months).

follow your personal intuition. some metal looks better against one or the other. silver proofs might look good against white, toned coins might look good on black, reddish copper may look great on black... it's up to you.

I have used the ring type also. Black or white is just your own preference for aestetics. Just don't lick the edges of your Morgans before holdering them and you'll be ok. :)

That IS NOT the web site of the manufacturer. That web site belongs to guy who was smart enough to purchase that particular domain name. he i sno different than any other seller of Air-Tites.

None of the ring inserts, regardless of color, affect the coins in any way shape or form. It is 100% impossible for them to affect the coin. This is because the insert rings are made from inert material.

Whatever caused any coin to change in an Air-Tite holder - it has never, ever, been because of the holder or the insert rings. It is physically and chemically impossible for inert material to cause any change whatsoever in a coin.

Alright, then if this is not the maker's web site, not the company that owns or has the rights to the patent and manufactures Air-Tite holder technology, can you please elaborate on your information as to who is if you are going to disclaim my post.

This site is using the name "Air-Tite Holders Inc." Is there a business directory source or a web site available for whom ever owns or manufactures Air-Tite holders? I see nothing on this site that says they are just a distributor of Air-Tite holders to individuals and dealers alike.

Of course you don't, that's because he wants it that way. Write to him and ask him yourself if you don't believe me.
