I have a dime that is stamped on front, but is completely smooth on the back with just a raised dot in the middle. The date on it appears to be 1973 D (the "3" is worn and may be a 7 - it is hard to read). It feels and weighs the same as a regular dime. Could this be a misstamp? If so, approximately how much would it be worth?
A picture would be very helpful. The bump makes me think machined off reverse, but w/o a pic, its hard to say. Welcome to cointalk. (Sorry, didn't see it before)
Yep, that does sound like it was turned on a lathe. Pictures Please. And WELCOME to the forum. :hail:
another photo of back of dime Hopefully this photo of the back is a bit more clear. I checked the thickness against a 1969 dime, and it does appear that it is about 25% thinner. The edge is worn, rather smooth without ridges, with coppery metal showing. I also checked the diameter against another dime, and that appears to be exactly the same; not any smaller than the 1969 dime. Thanks!
oh wait! i remember seeing a coin with the back pealed off on a girls necklace, looks kinda like that
Hi, It is post mint damage and it probably was turned in a lathe of some sort. This is sometimes the first step in the making of jewelery made from coins. Thanks, Bill
Some folks even solder a loop to these to make a button. They also attach these to the part needed to make a cuff-link.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Second, you did notice that this thread is twelve years old, didn't you? Third, it would be a good idea to start your own thread and post clear photos of both sides of the coin.
Here we go again! Someone doesn't take the time to give us any information or photos and isn't heard from nine hours later. You don't have the same coin! It may only look like it, but how can we tell? You haven't hung around long enough to give us any answers.
