So, I'm in the process of moving my nicer coins from 2x2 flips into better holders. I have been trying to find a resource that tells me the diameter of my WWII German coins so I can move my type set into appropriate holders. I have nothing here to measure their diameter with. Does anyone know the diameter of the following coins (preferably in mm): Weimer Republic Bronze Reichspfennig (1933-1936) (J.313) Third Reich Bronze Reichspfennig (1936-1940) (J.361) Third Reich Zinc Reichspfennig (1940-1945) (J.369) Weimer Republic Bronze 2 Reichspfennig (1936) (J.314) Third Reich Bronze 2 Reichspfennig (1936-1940) (J.362) Weimer Republic Aluminum-Bronze 5 Reichspfennig (1935-1936) (J.316) Third Reich Aluminum-Bronze 5 Reichspfennig (1936-1939) (J.363) Third Reich Zinc 5 Reichspfennig (1940-1944) (J.370) Weimer Republic Aluminum-Bronze 10 Reichspfennig (1933-1936) (J.317) Third Reich Aluminum-Bronze 10 Reichspfennig (1936-1939) (J.364) Third Reich Zinc 10 Reichspfennig (1940-1945) (J.371) Weimer Republic Nickel 50 Reichspfennig (1933-1938) (J.318) Third Reich Aluminum 50 Reichspfennig (1935) (J.368) Third Reich Nickel 50 Reichspfennig (1938-1939) (J.365) Third Reich Aluminum 50 Reichspfennig with Swastika (1939-1944) (J.372) Third Reich Nickel Reichsmark (1933-1939) (J.354) Third Reich .625 Silver 2 Reichsmark Luther (1933) (J.352) Third Reich .625 Silver 2 Reichsmark Church (1934) (J.355) Third Reich .625 Silver 2 Reichsmark Schiller (1934) (J.358) Third Reich .625 Silver 2 Reichsmark Swastika-Hindenburg (1936-1939) (J.366) Third Reich .900 Silver 5 Reichsmark Luther (1933) (J.353) Third Reich .900 Silver 5 Reichsmark Church with Date (1934) (J.356) Third Reich .900 Silver 5 Reichsmark Church no Date (1934-1935) (J.357) Third Reich .900 Silver 5 Reichsmark Schiller (1934) (J.359) Third Reich .900 Silver 5 Reichsmark Hindenburg (1935-1936) Third Reich .900 Silver 5 Reichsmark Swastika-Hindenburg (1936-1939) (J.367) Third Reich Military Coinage Zinc 5 Reichspfennig (1940-1941) Third Reich Military Coinage Zinc 10 Reichspfennig (1940-1941) Allied Occupation Coinage Zinc 1 Reichspfennig (1945-1946) Allied Occupation Coinage Zinc 5 Reichspfennig (1947-1948) Allied Occupation Coinage Zinc 10 Reichspfennig (1945-1948)
You can actually do that yourself: The Gietl-Battenberg publishing house has a site called "Coin Finder" - go to www.coinfinder.de * Enter the Jaeger catalog number in the field next to "Jaeger-Nummer". * Then click on "Suchen". * The next page shows some basic info; now click on "weitere Details" (on the right). The resulting page shows the diameter: "Durchmesser ... mm". (Further details, especially about prices/values, are available too, but they are not free.) By the way, it's "Weimar". But that was not the official name of that country anyway ... Christian
Oh perfect, thank you. Do you happen to know the Jaeger number for the allied occupation coins and the military coinage coins? My book doesn't seem to list them.
Here are the Jaeger numbers for the "Reichskreditkassen" coins: RKK 5 Rpf: 618 RKK 10 Rpf: 619 The diameters are the same as the sizes of the corresponding "domestic" pieces: 19 mm (5 Rpf) and 21 mm (10 Rpf). And the numbers of the Allied Occupation coins ... 1 Rpf: 373b 5 Rpf: 374 10 Rpf: 375 Hope this helps. Christian
Six dollars buys you a caliper which you can use down the road. I take mine with me to shows and purchase air-tites for my new coins while I'm there.
OK, so now that I know the sizes of the coins...here is my next question, what is the best storage for them? My hope was to use Intercept Shield 2x2s (as they are my favorite)...but the sizes don't work. I prefer 2x2 square holders and I hope I can find some that will minimize toning. Can you recommend any holders for these coins?
I'm not crazy about the round air-tites, but if that's all that would really work I suppose I could find someway to use them. Is it possible to find an album, like a unlabeled Dansco, that would fit the air tite in it's holes? I could then place the coin in the air-tite and insert the airtite into a home-labeled spot in the album.
OK, here is a question for you. According to the coinfinder.de website, the 1pf bronze and 1pf zinc coins (J.361, J.369) both have the exact same diameter...17.5mm. However, with the examples I have the bronze coins appear to be slightly larger than the zinc. They take up more room in the window of 2x2. I don't have a caliper to measure them and I don't want to remove them from the 2x2 right now anyway. Do you know if these coins should be the same size?
Hmm, that is a mistake in Coinfinder, I think. Interestingly, both Coinfinder and the Jaeger catalog are from the same publishing house ... Jaeger 361 (bronze) is 17.5 mm according to Jaeger and Coinfinder - right. Jaeger 369 (zinc, with swastika) is 17.0 in the Jaeger (right) but 17.5 in Coinfinder (wrong). Jaeger 373 (zinc, w/o swastika) is 17.0 according to Jaeger and Coinfinder - right. (Edit) Just got a note back from them; that mistake should be fixed now. Christian
OK, good. I was thinking I was just crazy or my eyes were playing tricks on me. I spend all day working on teeth in increments of 0.5mm...the 369 just looked way smaller to me. Anyway, with the 361 being a 17.5mm, what is the best storage for a coin with that size. The reason I ask is because airtites only have holders in increments of 1mm. So, I can use a 17mm or 18mm...or is there something better? I don't want to coin rattling around.
Hmm, I hope that somebody (else) can make a suggestion here. I am not really familiar with those holders ... Christian
