I have a modest subcollection of coins from descendants of Ghenghis Khan during the reign of Kublai Khan. Two coins featured in my latest notes. Kaidu Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, challenged Kublai Khan for the role of Great Khan for nearly 30 years. Kaidu was a Mongolian nationalist who opposed Kublai Khan's shift away from traditional Mongolian practices as he became the Chinese Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty and moved the capital to what is today Beijing. The coin shown above is from Abaqa Khan, a great-grandson of Genghis Khan and leader of the Ilkhanate. Kublai supported Abaqa as the Ilkhan over other factions within the empire, such as those led by Kaidu. Kaidu's legendary warrior daughter, Khutulun, was a notable character in a modern Netflix series and the 2021 movie "Princess Khutulun" and the inspiration for Turandot the opera by Giacomo Puccini by way of Carlo Gozzi's 1762 play "Turandot," which itself was derived from Pétis de La Croix’s tale from 1710. Turandot from a Persian word "Turandokht" which translates to "daughter of Central Asian region Turan"). The people of Turan were typically depicted in opposition to Iran, representing the nomadic and warrior cultures of Central Asia versus the settled, agricultural societies of the Iranian plateau. More on all of this in my notes: https://www.sullacoins.com/post/kaidu-khan-khutulun. Post your coins of the 13th and 14th-century Mongol khans.
I just posted it last week, but here it is again, an AR dirham of Hulagu (1256-1265), founder of the Ilkhans and the father of Abaqa:
