Hi All, Is there a chart somewhere that list what states get Denver mint coins, and what states get philadelphia minted coins ? I would like a listing for all fifty states.
It fluctuates year to year as well. Here in NW Indiana we get Denver about two times out of three but we've gone for years in the past with Philly issues.
DOUG I ask because I have a friend in Chicago who said he only gets Denver minted coins, and I was thinking he should get coins for Philadelphia maybe it is just his bad luck.
It really depends on the Federal Reserve - there are no hard and fast rules. The Fed orders coins from the mints as they need them. And I suppose if the closer mint doesn't happen to have a given denomination at a given time, then they get them from the other. The Fed map is - HERE
It is my opinion that your friend needs to look a little harder. I live in (the suburbs of) Chicago too and I find about 60-70% Denver, but I also find about 30-40% Philly in new rolls of coins. These numbers come from my searches for new rolls of statehood quarters in the weeks following their release and my search for the new nickels the last three years. As an aside, I am still looking for new rolls of 06-D nickels. I have found Philly nickels a few times, but so far no Denver ones.
I'm counting only the unmixed rolls when I say it's two out of three Denver. Living right on the edge most years pretty much assures there will be some coins coming in from the east in circulation right away. The mints divide up the expected demand and then ship coins as convenient. If the Philly mint started minting more of a coin than Denver for any reason then we'd probably get Philly here. In recent years the preponderance of Denver coins has actually been a little stronger. Freight rates probably are a major determinant of how they divide up the work.
I live in KY and have gotten rolls of SQ since about 2002-03 and have only once gotten D's....all the rest of the time P's.....I have a friend in TX and for the last few years he has only gotten D's but he said that when they first started they got P's. Speedy
I was just thinking of this very question since I'm moving from Iowa to Maine and just realized that I've taken for granted getting a mix of D and P coins, but it's probably almost 100% P in Maine. Thanks for asking it!
I'm east of the mississippi and I mostly see Denver coins. It could be the bulk of the coins are minted at different times between the two mints and shipped out due to supply and demand across the US. Meaning it is completely random and there is no set path for the coins to take.
Texas here and Denver mint marks reign supreme here. It is rare to see a new Phil. coin. From my experience.
Only about 10 miles from Denver so hardly suprising see mostly Denver stuff here... takes a long time for Philadelphia coins to arrive here in circulation. I often have trouble finding any Philadelphia stuff in virculation more recent than about 5 years ago.
