This morning on Ebay I saw this seller with counterfeit Morgan Silver Dollars for sale: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=186363035853&rt=nc&_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l170197&_ssn=calpel92 He has also sold other counterfeit dollars if you check his completed listings. I like to warn others of the fake coins out there and I like to learn from others if you have any comments on these coins. Thanks for looking!
I'm going with "fatty letters/numbers/stars, bad dentils/rims, standard brushed-on fake toning". I clicked through to the second auction, and the reverses on those are particularly atrocious.
Some things I notice just from the photos are the absence of nicks or bag marks even though the coins appear to have wear. Notice the unusual off color not really silver looking patina on both sides. I've seen this on many fake dollars both in person and on auctions. These are just some things I notice at a glance. I've also seen these fake dollars in person, and the weight is usually off, or they respond to a magnet. Temu is loaded with these Fake Morgan Dollars for sale. Here is just one example on Temu for sale:
For me it was each coin has the same tone and surface appearance. What gets me is these are common date/low value dates. Why bother?
Because you can buy these coins from China, for next to nothing, maybe 25 cents or less, buying in bulk. You can get any date you want, because people order them for reunions, anniversaries, etc. They are not restricted by having to put "ccopy" on them. It's the secondary sellers who know what they are doing.
None of his crap looks any good, his Silver Certificates look fake as hell! I hate sellers like this because they're liars and cheaters and they don't have a place in our hobby! I'll report his a$$ soon!
Yes the Morgans have been removed! I reported the silver certificates today as I was really busy yesterday and away from computers. I have no power whatsoever but I feel better reporting him anyways!
I'm happy other collectors are angry about these fakes. I realize there are posts going back 20 years about this but it frosts my azz that this is filtering into the US and is mostly preying on unsuspecting buyers, who will innocently pass them off as legit coins to more unsuspecting buyers. It's EASY to detect fakes by listings "from China" but then once they get into the general population, then what? Private sellers unknowingly selling to more innocent victims, no one the more wiser until tested. Makes me mad AF!
