I thought I had posted this a few years ago, but I can't find it on CT.

MY question is basically: what, if any, value remains in this otherwise very reasonable condition coin? According to NCG, it ought to be worth around $100-150, without the counter stamp.

There's got to be some of that as a residual, even if only to a select few.

Oh, yeah: who was STIBBS? Anyone...??

Your opinions and comments are most welcome! wlw

Stibbs is a known Counterstamp, but unattributed. Brunk lists three examples but none on an 1853 Latge Cent. There's also an H.Tibbs stamp known but I haven't seen a picture to compare it to yours. I guess Mr. Stibbs wanted to be sure that people noticed his name on the coin. A bit of overkill there.

Please forgive my abysmal ignorance, but...who is Virgil Tibbs?

And y'all's valuation estimations are quite probably much closer to the mark than my wishful dreaming. Sigh...wlw

    OK...now I know 'bout Virgil.

For the record, I don't have, or watch elsewhere, TV.

Long story, goin' back to childhood in the early 50's. wlw

Pretty sure it had value to STIBBS. If you can find him,,,, jackpot!

"In The Heat Of The Night" was a movie long before it became a TV show, and Sidney Poitier played Virgil Tibbs.:)

Sidney Poitier's signature saying was "They call me Mr. Tibbs." Thanks for the memories.

The Counterstamp is a well known one, in fact, I have a large Cent with the same Counterstamp.

I looked for it last night and found it but got distracted and didn’t link to it. It’s in the “Let’s see your exumonia!” thread, starting on p.151. Interesting responses on this guy. Definitely he’s where the money is on this coin, as it’s otherwise just damage, and the worse for the counter-stamp across her face. She’s EF/AU, technically, as I have her. But it’s the value of the counter-stamp that’s the big deal on these, and there is a market for them, because they are in a sense “exumonia,” and not just damage.

    • Now wait a minute, that train don’t leave ‘till 12:00 Noon, what they pay you $162.39 a week to look at bodies, why can’t you look at this one?
    • Why don’t you look at it for yourself?
    • Because I’m not an expert, Officer.
    Always loved this movie. :)

I have no clue on your coins value, but for me, I'd keep it (as apparently you have) as a conversation piece. With the exception of being low in number with the counter stamp, it is unique.

    That's very intriguing!
Would you please post some pics of your large Cent?
An opportunity to compare could be most informative...and will be gratefully received! wlw

I looked and I would but I can't find any photos. If I find them I will. I just have a number of Counterstamped coins.
