Hi All - new to CoinTalk, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion on a coin that I found a while back. I put it away, but came across it again today and am curious about it. Its a 1999 nickel that seems to be coated in copper - is this an error from the mint? Not sure how "rare" it is, or how it happened. Any comments are welcome - thanks!
Can you post a close-up of the rim at 12:00 on the reverse for me please? It looks sort of silvery right there. Chris
Many do not know the copper portion of a nickel is alloyed and not a layer like the plated zinc cents. Man-made/altered. If you have a scale ~ weigh it. I guess plated. Jim
What he said. Looks like the nickel I coated with plasma sputtered Au/Pd about 30+ years ago (wasting time in the SEM lab). I bet if you look at the silver spots on the reverse rim, you'll see either peeling or evidence of where it was held during plating.
Chris - yeah there is definitely a silver area at the top, which is why i was wondering if it had been through some kind of coating process.
Paddy - don't remember honestly. I found it back in high school just as general change from somewhere and had my mom put it away in storage. Found it recently when digging through some things. The color hasn't faded or patinated over time, but its also not been in circulation for over 10 years.
Thanks for posting the close-up. Yes, it does look like the coin might have been coated with something. There also appears to be a an area that was scraped above the dome. Chris
For the past few weeks I've been going through all of our change that we've been collecting for years and years, and I just now found a copper nickel. Is copper on both sides. Is this worth anything?
