American, here. I've seen smaller and some larger European banks selling bullion, retail. I've never seen that in the USA. (I believe US banks did sell GSA Silver bullion bags up until the the 1970s; that's not my topic.) I'm asking about now. I was just reading about a Swiss numismatic dealer; a credentialed, academic staff member had worked "28 years with the numismatic department of {a famous Swiss bank} and its successors." Do you know any commercial banks in the USA, Asia or Europe which maintain "numismatic departments" for retail clients? (Presumably, High Net Worth?)
Many Swiss and German banks had numismatic arms in the past, (think Bank Leu), but nearly all have been spun off into separate companies. The growth of the hobby here was simply different than in Europe.
not numismatic coins, but there is a bank chain in the Boston area that sells gold and silver bullion and advertise it on the radio http://truthalliance.net/Archive/Ne...rea-Bank-Selling-Gold-Coins-To-Customers.aspx
We have a few vending machines in Vegas that dispense gold bullion. Though I'm not positive, I believe they were the property of a local bank.
While back our local bank was selling collector coins and sets, but they didn't belong to the bank they were part of a commercial arrangement with Silvertowne. Silvertowne supplied the coins and sets and the bank sold them from a display in the lobby and got a percentage.
Bingo! Highly unusual, but exactly as I would have thought (it's an ethnic bank.) http://www.leaderbank.com/Documents/News/1339693376.pdf Leader has a nearby branch by a cluster of Indian-owned businesses; I'll check if they're still selling bullion next week or if that was largely a gimmick (2011 article.)
Barry Armstong (Financial Exchange 10am-noon, M-F on WRKO) currently does a promo for them (Leader Bank's gold coins). I also hear Howie Carr doing a promo for them, as well. I have yet to stop into their Burlington location and get the full info.
BW Bank in Stuttgart, DE does that for example. As for Austria, here is a list of Austrian Mint partners that sell bullion products. To find a bank, look for places that have "Bank" or "Sparkasse" in the name.
Hahaha! Maybe it's just my browser, but chrisild's link had pop-up to the Austrian Mint's "Golden Conchita" (OP Edited: I made a new post for it.) Any Canadian banks sell bullion? I think that might be reasonable to suppose.
