I have a copy of the 13 edition of Collecting World Coins circulating issues 1901 to present. Does anyone know if there is a newer edition of this book? I have been doing some looking around. Looks like they may be out of print now? Is there a 2000 to present edition out there? I can't seem to find anything, must not be looking in the right place. I have been using Numista to look some newer coins up online but would prefer a book. Thanks
I think they still make them, just not listing Krause as editor any more. Here's a 2020 edition. And here's the Wikipedia page for the series showing the editor change. The Krause guides are a great resource but... Many coins are hard to find for the price listed, especially older ones. And you may need a more detailed guide if you collect varieties.
This is the newest, courtesy of amazon. 2020 Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 (2020) My copy is 2016 edition I believe. My guess is that the prices change marginally, if at all, based on prior experience with this series. I'm happy with my slightly outdated one, because most prices stay the same, but the new one is probably just a few bucks more.
What you see is what you get. F+W Media (owner of the Krause name) went bankrupt in 2019. The 2020 edition of the Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 was published July 9, 2019. In the bankruptcy auction: The publications (Numismatic News which is the source of most of the data in the books) was sold to Cruz Bay Publications (a division of Active Interest Media). The books were sold to Bertelsmann AG's Penguin Random House Press. An updated catalog edition that had been listed on Krause's website was transferred to Penguin and then dropped shortly afterwards.
Thanks for the information. Any opinions for online sources? I know of numista and the ngc world coin guide.
I haven't looked a recent Krause in a while but I understand Numista is a community effort, so sections which are quite unloved in Krause and haven't been touched in years are up to date on Numista.
I find for a lot of moderately obscure world coins, Numista will have no pricing data at all. Numista data are user reported, and can be several years old. So even when there is data it may not be reflective of current prices. Or I'll see a coin listed as a lower price in a better grade than in a lower grade. I often find that even an obsolete Krause guide is more useful for getting relative ideas of pricing, which dates and mints are rarer, etc. Here's an example at random for a recent coin purchase: Baden 6 Kreuzer 1847 Of the whole series, Numista only has user entries for one date (1847) and 2 grades (F and VF), which are listed at the same price. Even my very obsolete Krause guide has a lot more information. The prices follow a generic progression with grade, and are probably filled in from some sort of formula rather than based on actual sales. But there's still a lot more info than I can get from Numista.
AIM has put NumisMaster back on the air, but behind a paywall. https://numismaster.com/ So if you see pricing in Numismatic News or Coins Magazine, it's the same data. What they don't have is a publishing platform. Could they create one? Sure. But it's hard to imagine why.
