:smile Does Anybody Here Collect Indian Head Pennies? I Started Collecting When I Bought One For A Dollar At A Antique Shop. It Was A 1909 With Full Liberty. I Think I Got A Good Buy On It. I Amost Have A Full Set Of Them. I Have All Of The 1900's. I Still Need The 1880's And 1890's. It Will Be Nice When I Finish The Set. I Am Also Into Collecting Wheat Pennies. I Bet I Have Over A Thousand. I Usually Buy Rolls Of Wheat Pennies At Flea Markets. I Pay $2.50 A Roll. One Time I Got A 1912D In One. I Mostly Have Alot Of 40's And 50's (Who Dosen't!) But Some 10's 20's and 30's. I Am Looking For A Lower Grade 1909 VBD One. I Talked To The Coin Dealer And He Said He Could Probaly Sell Me One For $4. I plan To Buy The More Expenisve Coins Because I Know That They Will Be Alot More In The Near Future. Somtimes I Buy A Couple Morgan Dollars When I See A Good Deal. One Time I Bought A 1896O Morgan Dollar For $18. I Know That The Price Of Silver Is Rising So I Buy My Silver Coins Before I Buy My Copper Or Clad Coins.:smile

I collect their first cousins, but there are literally thousands more of them. I will consider it a major accomplishment if I even hit the 25% mark.

CL-I too collect Indian Cents. I'm only missing the 1877 & 09-S. Good luck finishing the set-it will be tough, but worthwhile.

Indianheads are great! Especially when you find them in rolls or in circulation! Which is about never! But I've done it 5 times and 3 were in good enough shape to make my collection! One of them actually BU!

I completed my full set of Lincolns (minus 1955 double die and 1922 no D and real fancy stuff like 1999 Wide AM) and of course, it was natural to move on to the Indians. I try to buy one coin every other week. Of course, I have the big dogs left - but I'll get them. My recommendation though is when you buy the 1877, 1864L, 1872 and 1908 and 9 S ... that you buy them from a reputable dealer or make sure they're slabbed by a reliable company. Too many fakes and misrepresented coins out there. In principal - any coin I buy over $50 must have dealer/grade approval. Protect your investments you know? And of course, once you get your coins, you will want to find a way to store them so they aren't exposed to whatever. I'd say a full set of Indians is even worth insuring! Yes. Your homeowners in most cases WILL NOT cover your coins. I'm not kidding! If you have any doubts check with your agent! My isurance requires me to pay $15/year per $1,000 in coins. Little over a buck a month for $1,000 in protection - I'll take it. That covers theft, fire, children (lol) etc. I have to list everything I have, but I determine the value as well because I'm paying the ratio for the insurance. So, that 1909 S VDB that I feel is worth $850 by say Coin Values - is only going to get say $725 in an auction ... I'm covered for the $850 as long as I pay the proper rate on the coin. Insuring them is a great way to protect your investment - I would just break down and cry if I lost my coins... but the insurance check coming in would at least give me the ability to try and get a new going soon and take the sting out of all the hard work I did and lost.

Indianheads are great though! There are several variants and double dies. I would recommend getting the 2007 Redbook of coins and then thumbing through the small cents chapter to see! I figure it's going to be a couple years before I get my Indianhead collection complete. But when it is, I'm going for large cents (I have the 1857 and 1858 Flying Eagles already and an 1856 is probably never going to reach my ownership) My 1858 Large Letter Flying Eagle is MS 64 and I just absolutely LOVE that coin. The artwork is tremendous. A lot of people consider the Flying Eagles as PART of the Indianhead collection because the backs are the same for the 1859 Indianhead and that there were so few Flying Eagles made. I really wish they had made more Flying Eagle pennies. Don't get me wrong, I really like Indianhead pennies a lot ... but the Flying Eagle was the most beautiful one cent piece ever made.

    Yes, I have a few. Missing the 09-s, 77, and about (3) 1860s. I'll eventually get them ;)

IHC's are definitely my favorite! The idea of getting the keys next is a good one. They go up faster than more common ones and come down slower usually too. So in the long run, in a bull market, you would save money if you bought say, the 1877 first. I believe the last one I needed for my collection was the 1885. I need a couple up grades like on the 1867 etc. Have fun!

I have a few IHC and am thinking about starting a collection of them.....of the keys all I'm missing is the 1877---I just picked up the 1909-S in VF30 and have a 1908-S in VF also---they are really neat coins---the only thing I don't like is that they are copper and not silver!

Copper is one of things that makes collecting them fun! Depending on what you consider a complete set - I now need 70-73 and 77 in XF or better to complete a date set. With those grades it will take me a while to find what I want and can afford. Once I have those I think I will look for some of the extras like 94 double date and etc.

I saw the 1909S Speedy and it is a nice coin, but I think it is truly VF30. Great coin!

    Hey Mark
Thanks--Yes I agree with the VF30 grade---I have seen too many KEY coins get overgraded by the TPG's and that is why I posted the comment about the grade ;)
It was too bad that you missed the show--they are going to have another one sometime soon they hope---either in the fall or next year!
Either way I hope to set up again as it was really fun to do!

Look at every 1864 you can find in bargain bins and what not, a lot of the time I have found that dealers don't look too carefully for the L on the ribbon. I found 4 already. Look for the pointed bust then look for the L. Good Luck

Have a complete set (F+) here. (Missing overdates) Looking for a better 09S though. There sure are nice when they get in the AU + range.

I'm working on 5 sets right now. I need the 1877 & 1909-s for the main set. I will keep 2 or 3 for my children. The rest are just to put the ones I change out for better grades, because I get so many different dates in lots and such.

Thalia is working on a partial set - just 1880 and later and not counting the "S"s - most of which are coming out of a "treasure box" at the local coin dealer.

I'll help her go after the rarer ones later, since she's six. Although that might not be much longer since there are only four left in the partial set!

She got a Flying Eagle as "special change" from her last purchase, so she's ahead of me there as well!
