I am checking Numista and it only lists Costa Rican circulating coins until 2016. Is it just not updated, or Costa Rican coins are no longer minted or used?
I don't know about CR specifically, but it's not unheard of for a country to not mint new coins for a few years. That could be it.
Hi Tom! I checked online for a bit and as well on Catawiki and could not find any coin available after 2016. I randomly searched Morocco, Peru and Venezuela and all of them showed coins up to 2018. These may not necessarily mean there aren't any, but are good indicators that nothing was minted in Costa Rica after 2016. Here are two links, the first is for catawiki where you can select the country you are looking for and the second is the link for catawiki Costa Rica 1. https://www.catawiki.com/catalog/coins/59793-countries 2. https://www.catawiki.com/catalog/coins/countries/148597-costa-rica
I was recently in Costa Rica and can attest that coins are in wide circulation. If you look at the recent history of CR coinage, there are frequent breaks of a few years. Seems to vary by denomination. Maybe they just mint more coins when they need them. What a novel idea!
Sí, Señor. If one looks at the central bank's website, this page has some info about the coins. Roughly in the middle of the page there is an orange/blue table that lists the coin denominations and, for each of them, when they minted them. So yes, the most recent ones are the 5 and 10 colones 2016 ... Christian
As modern coinage goes, Costa Rica's isn't too shabby. I've been there three times since 2010, and always bring back a handful of the big 33mm 500 colones coins to pass around to grandkids and kids in the neighborhood.
I would not bet against them occasionally "freezing " a date for coins and them to be struck other years as well.
