    Hey Ya'll
It has been said that I should get the ball rolling for a larger coin show in KY.....I'm wanting to write the ANA a letter here this next week asking them to look into it.
There hasn't been a large coin show in KY for over 5+ years and I know that there are many that would come....in fact there is one town in KY that is only 1 days drive from 2/3 of everyone in the US....so it would be a good spot.

So this is my idea....I'm going to write a letter and will add all of the names (and email addresses) I can gather on the end... if you would be interested in a large coin show coming to KY send me a PM with your name and email address so I can add them with my note.

I don't know if this will work or not....maybe the ANA will do one here sometime....and maybe this will hit a dead end...but at least we all would have tried.

I kind of know what you mean. I've tried to get my son interested in coin collecting for a long time. He lives in Tennessee and tells me there is virtually no interest in coins anywhere that he knows of around there. No shows, no coin stores, nothing.

There are stores around here but only about 1 every few towns.....

Come on guys....we have about 5+ names and need all we can get.....

Sorry Speedy, I only go to a couple shows a year and I live in a place with 2+ shows a month, so I probably won't be driving to KY for a show, no matter how big. Maybe if I had more income, or freetime, or was employed in numismatics, but alas, none of those are the case :(

That is ok TCT---I'm hoping that the ANA will maybe start to host Coin Shows in places like KY where there hasn't been a big show in years.
I might not even get to go if it would come but when a show comes I think that there is a great place to get new collectors started with our great hobby.

I am sure the ANA has to weigh all of the facts and demographics of what the area (host city) has to offer before they pick a location.

What about travel? I travel a bit and unless you are going through a major hub like Chicago or Atlanta, there are no direct flights to any cities in KY. With that said alone, less airline choices for arrival/departure equals higher flight costs.

What about hotel? I guess they have enough hotel rooms where the Derby is run, but does that location make sense for a national meeting?

What about things to do? Okay, we go to the show to buy/sell our beloved coins, but what about other areas of attaction?

So...between travel logistics, hotels, convention floor space requirements, things to do (especially for the wife and kids that want nothing to do with numismatics), and buying power of the attendees (to attract sellers), this is what KY is up against.

    Good luck...

Kentucky has alot more to offer than most people think.....
About travel....there are 3 large airports around here....and they are in the larger cities--and there are lots of direct flights to and from them....

Hotels....there are LOTS.....I bet in my town (which isn't large when you think about large towns) there are 20+ hotels and such.....the place where the Derby is run would be a fine place to have it...It is right near Ohio and pretty near IN too....

And yes KY has tons of attractions.....places for the wife to shop.....places to go after the show....zoos....parks....museums...other shows going on....historic places all around KY....caves.....and much much more!

I don't think it would be hard to have a good sized coin show and get tons of people here also.....as I said above it is only one days drive from 2/3 of the people in the USA---the small show I go too is always packed with people and I'm sure the same would be for a large one.

Anyway.....its no good thinking about something if you can't maybe jump-start the idea in someones head.....that is what I'm hoping to do....it might take 5 years to make something happen but maybe an idea will be put in the mind of the ANA to bring coins to more people in KY.

Sorry Speedy! It took me a while to find this thread. You must not travel a whole lot Midas or least not to kentucky :). Most major cities have a direct flight to Louisville. I use direct flights all the time when traveling (Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Chicago, St Louis, Phili., Etc.) Plus the Future Farmers of America have been holding their conventions for a while in this city - and it would be interesting to compare the size of that convention versus a coin convention. So travel, hotels, etc. are not a problem.

Things to do - there are a number of things within 1 hour drives. I do recommend seeing the Frazier Museum. One of the best arms museums around. Plus there is a 6 flags at the convention center - something to keep the kids busy. The kids could go one way and the parents another - while parking in the same place. Besides Louisville is now in the top 20 based on population. So we should be able to support a coin convention. Louisville is also about 2 hours from Indi and and 1.5 hrs from Cinci. So we are very centrally located.

So I think Kentucky - Louisville or Lexington would be a good place for a convention. Maybe not every year but at least every 2/3 years. What other selling points do we need???????

I lived in Loovuhl (one syllable) until last October, and would move back in a heartbeat. Not only is it close to Cincinnati and Indy, it's also about 3-4 hours from Nashville, a little over 5 from Chicago, about 5 from St. Louis and about 8 from Atlanta. There's also the Louisville Slugger Museum, a restored Shaker town about an hour east, minor league baseball, Arena Football, the Cards. They also have a GREAT dealer in town, who is, as I understand, well respected nationally. If they had a show there, I'd probably use it as an excuse to visit friends still in town.

Being across the river from Indiana is reason enough for everyone to attend.

MI, IN, KY and TN. The four best all in a row!!:)

Keep in mind that many dealers travel continuously and you will have to convince them to attend and display at your show. Competition for one of the 52 weekends per year is very tough. What is going to attract collectors is the number of sellers offering their goods and what is going to attract sellers is the quantity and quality of buyers that attend.

    Good Luck...

I looked some things up and it looks like the ANA has NEVER had a show in KY....the last one anywhere near was in 1998 and that was in Cincinnati....
Also I looked up where they will be having the next few....and till 2010...
    2006
    Denver, CO, August 16-19
ANA Member Appreciation Day, Colorado Springs, CO August 20
    2007
    Sacramento, CA, March 23-25
    Milwaukee, WI, August 8-12
    2008
    Phoenix, AZ, March 7-9
    Baltimore, MD, July 30-August 3
    2009
    Portland, OR, March 13-15
    Los Angeles, CA, August 5-9
    2010
    Boston, MA, August 11-15

So in other words...unless you live on the West Cost you don't see a major coin show....that isn't right.
The ANA should be a world wide club...and host show in more than one place.....CA is great I'm sure but most of us I'm sure will never go from the East to the West just for a day or two for a show...The ANA needs to think about their memebers elsewhere.

Good luck Speedy. Since Atlanta (a very non numismatic city) had an ANA show, I would think KY would be able to do something with the ANA.

Well I mailed the letter last week.....maybe they will at least email and tell me they got the note...
I decided that it wouldn't do much good to send it to the mail ANA address so I mailed it to the President....he was just saying in the last issue of their mag. that they want people to write because this NEW "ANA Goverment" WILL listen to what the people want and need.....
I do want to thank everyone who sent in their name....just maybe us collectors in KY will get a show sometime soon.
