Hello all Meow wanted to see if there was an ideal way to store wrapped quarter rolls. Meow has some clear plastic tubes, and some Coinsafe tubes. The Coinsafe tubes are of high quality, but are opaque and don't show of the roll well, But that is not the main issue. The Coinsafe rolls don't seem to be long enough for a good percentage of rolls, and the caps wont fit all the way. The clear plastic tubes (BCW) show off the roll very well, but the diameter of the tube is a bit too tight and the rolls will get stuck in them or wont cap either. Meow once tried to force a US Mint wrapped quarter roll in the clear tube, and ended up having to crack the tube as the roll got permanently stuck.

So what would you guys use? Are there larger diameter and longer clear tubes for quarters out there? The clear tubes are great for US Mint wrapped tubes as they very clearly show the contents of the roll as it is printed on the wrapping paper. Orange OBW roll not so much as the wrapper is generic most of the time, but at least one can tell the tube contains a wrapped tube easily. Meow is just looking for a neat and orderly way to sort and store a roll collection.

Honestly, I believe that all those clear plastic tubes shrink over time.... Point being, if you get your quarters in there nicely today.... Five years from now you may well be cracking the tubes open anyway.

I know something about having to crack quarters out of a roll...

Meow would hope modern clear plastic holders won't degrade in such a fashion. But that was a really bad issue, and Thanks you for sharing.

Do you have OBW tubes in your collection? If so, What do you use?

JP's Corner has storage boxes available for rolls.

I used to. I don't any longer. I was damaging coins trying to bust them out of shrunken tubes. If I store rolls, they are simple paper rolls. I keep the rolls in empty ammo cans. They fit quite nicely.

What are you trying to accomplish ?

as in just "storing the quarter rolls" ?
wanting to hermetically seal the quarter rolls ?

you could use rubbermaid plastic containers, ziploc bags, glass containers, etc ... all depending upon what you want to accomplish.

i like to use Whitman's plastic tubes. i have 5 or so cent tubes that are about 20 years old. they are very slightly yellow fade color but still can see whats inside for identification. and they are thinner plastic but still rugged. i just got a bag of 10 new ones and the quality is still great. that just my 2 cents LOL.

Well Meow wanted to have the rolls to be sealed to keep them from tarnishing, but wanted them sealed individually like in a roll tube. So to be able to see clearly whats in it, and have it be a stand alone protected item appeals to Meow. But from what Meow has heard so far, clear tubes can be really bad as they can shrink. Meow has seen on fleabay quarter rolls sold by third party packagers that are in clear heavy duty tubes with fancy packaging; And they present themselves well. Meow did once buy a half tube of quarters with a single coin both in heavy duty tubes that read resident rolls on the paper wrapping the half roll. A very nice way to keep a roll Meow thought. Meow got it for a reasonable price on Fleabay a while ago.

Did you ever try to put OBW rolls in them? If so, did they fit well? Well enough so one can get the roll back out without issue? And be long enough to fit the crimped edge of the rolls? Meow would think quarter a roll would need to be able to store 43 loose quarters to have enough room for a OBW roll.

i tried but it failed. so i went to the next size bigger and it worked. also what i did with those rolls i wrapped electrical tape around the top of the tube sealing the screw on lid with the rest of the tube. but now i have taken out my rolls that where paper and transferred them imminently into the new Whitman cent tubes. at this time i only have cents rolls. all those cents in the cent rolls are in new Whitman tubes at this time.

Meow did buy a few boxes that hold 50 tubes in several denominations. They are sturdy well made boxes. But Meow wants nice, sealed, and well fitted tubes to put in the boxes. Meow has Many Coinsafe tubes. They are well made, but opaque, and not long enough to hold some rolls. The length of OBW rolls can vary a bit. A few will fit well in the Coinsafes, and few will be a little too long, and some are a lot longer and wont fit well at all. The caps will only go on half way, and Meow feels that defeats the sealing properties of the tube.

Meow tried that too for the Coinsafe rolls. A too bulky to fit penny rolls fit into a nickel tube well. A bulky dime roll will fit in a penny tube well. BUT, the quarter roll has no such substitute. The half dollar tube is way to short and way to wide in diameter. Meow is collecting wrapped quarters now, and is a bit dismayed as to a nice storage solution.

@MeowtheKitty None of the tubes made for coins were intended to have a paper wrapped roll put inside them. The diameter will not allow for this comfortably. Have you considered looking for medical type tubes which come in various diameters? They make them in styrene and polypro variations. The styrene are clear and polypro opaque. I worked in the medical industry for 38 years and was able to acquire all I wanted of the rejects which simply had minor blemishes and these worked great for me until I retired and was no longer able to get any. Styrene cannot be dropped or they will shatter. Polypro holds up very nicely but you can't see through them.

Wow, that is bit more than Meow was thinking of doing. Meow was hoping for a easy uniform way to store Meow's quarter rolls. But thanks for sharing your experience.

Well, how about using blocks of Styrofoam, probably found at a craft store like Michaels. You could cut out a hole the same diameter as your roll and insert each into the hole without using any tubes? Not as simple as just putting in a tube but might work. You would not have to cut the holes deep enough to bury the tube, just enough to secure it without the block being able to tip over.

FWIW, I stored all of my Mint-wrapped SQ rolls (100+) in the 50-roll storage boxes I got from JP's Corner and never had a problem with tarnishing.

I also use the 20-roll & 50-roll boxes for Mint-wrapped and bank-wrapped rolls of Westward Journey nickels and still don't have a problem with tarnishing after 13 years.

Meow lives in a very humid climate so that is not a viable long term solution. Meow looked around quite a bit and made some inquiries, but so far no luck with finding perfect tubes for wrapped quarters.
