I read on this forum the other day about a home-made coin ring and how others make and sell these rings, and I had to have one. Just came in the mail today - this is a 1951 Franklin half ring, made by The Coin Smith.
that is SOOOO incredibly cool! Do they make them in varying sizes, or are they all within a size or so due to the half dollar size?
Different coins are used for different ring size ranges. Mine is a size 12 (pretty large), so the half was the best option for me. This link shows all the different coin options for various ring sizes: http://www.thecoinsmith.net/Gallery.html
I am quite impressed..are they reasonably priced? (I didnt want to send some personal info just to get an quote)
These are really cool. I have seen them on ebay for around 30-50 dollars. However, someone in another thread reported that after wearing his for about 6 months, the design on the outside of the ring had worn off, turning it into just a silver band.
I am ordering one as well, Rigo. I think that the Walkers are very cool. Carlton may have a point as they are coins and will show design wear. I think that the nickel coins will do much better. I wonder how many coins he is going to sell from this thread alone? (WTG Coin Ring Dude!)
The clad coins may wear better. He makes rings from statehood quarters, I imagine you could make one from a clad Kennedy half as well. I bet these would wear very well.
I'm sure all will eventually wear off but you still have a nice silver band at the end. I am a very matriculate person so I will take care of it so the design can last me a pretty long time. Matt, you should get one. I paid what $39. for it or something like that. No shipping in the U.S. too so you can't really beat it. And, the work must be nice as this is all the seller does.
The Coin Smith Thanks for all the interest. The coin rings I make are from all types of coins and tokens. The ring sizes range from size 1-20. Your ring size will dictate which size coin you can use. Pennys and Dimes make sizes 1-3, Nickels:2-4, Quarters:4.5 - 8.5, Small Dollars:7-10, Half Dollars:7.5-13, Large Dollars:13-17. These are optimum ring sizes for the various coins. Larger and smaller sizes can be made but not always recommended. Prices range from $30 - $50 for most rings. Silver Dollar Rings a bit more. :smile As for wear, coins wear out over time as we all know. The silver coin rings I sell are heat treated and hardened. (They are in fact harder than circulating coins so they wear much better) I don't know of any other maker of coin rings that does this. You also have the option of choosing a coin made out of nickel, copper, brass, etc... On clad coins, I silver plate them which seals off the copper edge and enhances the rings overall appearance. This plating doesn't last forever but my customers like it. If you have a coin you would like made into a coin ring let me know. This will save you the cost of the coin and makes the ring even more unique to the wearer. Contact info removed , RULE 3-B.
For those who are interested. I thought I would show a few of my coin rings. These half dollar coins can be made into ring sizes 8.5 - 13 with either the obverse or reverse side of the coin on the outside of the band.
I told my girlfriend to buy me one of these for our anniversary since they are inexpensive. I was gonna ask about wear but it seems this has already been brought up lol. Not positive whether I want a walking liberty or barber though........ Does anybody here wear one of these on a daily basis?
I've been wearing my Franklin half (birth year) ring since it arrived in the mail a week ago - love it.
