Good evening all hope my title wasn't out of line but I'm not coin roll hunting just laundromat hunting. So I go in to the laundromat get $40 worth of quarters quickly separate eight of them or 20 of them to wash my clothes so I quickly look at the mint market for W's before I toss them in the machine. When I get home I separated what 160 quarters and came up with these no silver in the 65 but if you look at that 1971 looks like it's came out of somebody's proof box it's really nice got a lot of patina on it not really alot of hits for being 71. Talk to me guys five bucks maybe tops gracias oh by the way take a look at the nine in the date it wasn't on VV.. later. Oh I was going to say $40 worth of coins 160 quarters, pretty good percentage finding something like that in a little bit amount of coins. Cheers..
Nice coin, but definitely not a proof. It's a 1971-D. The Denver mint doesn't make proofs. AU condition, maybe half a buck is all.
Not a chance for AU. Certainly not a proof, as explained by @manny9655 I see the 71-D as no more than 35-40. There's a lot of wear on George's hair. IMO, $.25
I like the eagle design. and I hoard quarters That's all. They'll all worth 25 cents unless you have something in spectacular condition (which probably won't be found in a laundromat) or some rare error.
Coin hunt wherever you can. Laundromats are good for quarters if you have to be there anyways for doing laundry (I've done laundry at laundromats too). And if you get extra quarters and have to spend them and you need to wash your car, that works too if you can find one of the older car washes still (too bad, most have disappeared). Another way is to when you get groceries, and you pay in cash, just as the cashier is opening his/her drawer to give you change ask if you can have a couple dollars in quarters or nickels, dimes, etc. as you need them for a "parking meter" or whatever later (make up something you must use change for). Sometimes they will break a up to 3-5 dollars worth if they have it in the till.
In 1982 and 1983 the Mint did not produce any Mint Sets. Mint sets are where people can get business strike P and D coins in uncirculated Mint States, usually in the mid-60s for grades. Without the mint doing this in these years, both 1982 and 1983 quarters are difficult to find in very high MS grades. All of the quarters from Philly and Denver were released to circulation and during the time people were collecting them, not too many were found to be very high quality in strikes. So it is what you call a conditional rarity. This means that a coin is rare and collectable in a certain range of grades (in this case, MS60-up for the 1982 P or D quarter especially) because there is not enough supply for the demand. A lot of people do collect the modern (1965-on) Washington Quarters and many people collect coins in uncirculated condition. I don't 'hoard' these but I certainly will pull out any coins that are in MS63 or above for 1982 and 1983 quarters. Those have a lot of value relative to what you might think they should be worth. One of those things that if you have knowledge that others don't and you happen upon something, you can make a bit of money off it sometime. I always will retain any quarter I think is worth a couple to a lot of bucks and not spend them in stores, etc.
They were also released at the Mint in Souvenir sets. These sets can still be found, but most have become pretty pricey.
When you are right, you are right. A mint set then would have been essentially two souvenir sets put together, right? But they weren't. Interesting. Thanks for showing that.
A mint set would contain a Philly Souvenir also. They try to sell these on the internet but I believe they were only sold individually. Plus, you had to go and buy them directly from the mint.
First thanks everybody for your comments and the schooling. As for the 82's and 83 a while back I found out somewhere about the new tools at 83 so all the ones that I find I'm pulling up my understanding was high Ms condition but as I read ms 60 or higher. Now I'm going to have to pull them and look at them again of course I am no greater so if I have any questions I'll post about here you people are the bomb.
