I have all but 3 of the Morgan dollars. None of them are graded. I don't want to send them to a TPG. But, I would like to know if there are any services that offer a conditional grade just by photo. Is that something that is even out there? Thanks.

Yeah, no. Photos are too good at lying. Or, rather, photographers are too good at lying with photos.

Really? Why would I lie to myself?

Yes, and I would appreciate that. But, I'm talking all the Morgans. I wouldn't want my CT friends to go to that much trouble.

Maybe not you, but others might.

This coin was cleaned. The first set of pics is accurate to in-hand appearance. The color looks pale and unnatural. The second set were edited to give a more natural look to the surfaces.

That's a question people have been asking a lot longer than either of us have been alive.

Do you see the cleaning on any of these coins? If not, I did a good job as a photographer.

I like the honesty of one of the eBay sellers when he says, ". . . we assume all coins have been cleaned . . ."

Actually it seems to me that grading up to MS60 isn't THAT hard (ignorance is bliss), but distinguishing all the MS grades is difficult!

You could post some of your Morgan Dollars here, and ask for people to grade them. If you have a copy of one the recognized photographic grading guides, you should be able to do a good job of grading them yourself.

As for the service you want, I don't think that anyone offers it, at least no one whose opinions have an impact on the market.

According to Rod Gillis of the ANA, virtually all Morgan's are cleaned. Is this your experience?

Pictures never lie, but photographers do.

    I own Photoshop Elements
With practice I suspect I could upgrade coin photos a level or two.
    I don't but I'm sure other do.
That's one of the reasons I buy mostly slabbed (NGC and PCGS) coins.

He’s off-base with that comment. Given the millions of Mint State Morgan Dollars that came from mint bags, it’s hard to believe that vast numbers of them have been cleaned over the past two decades.

Yes, I have a photo grade publication "Making the Grade". I am not trying to sell my coins. My eyes are very old - 77. I have been collecting these for 72 years. The vast majority I picked from banks, change and trades when a silver dollar was only worth a dollar. You could go into any bank and give dollar for dollar for any silver they had in their drawer. I am not looking for MS anything. G, F, VF, XF, AU, UNC. is all I was interested in. And, I know that the trend today is don't trust anyone until you have proof that they are trustworthy. In my day everyone was trusted until they proved that they were not to be trusted. Plus, I didn't want to burden the kind members of this forum. I just wanted a guesstimate of what I have. Thanks for all the feedback.
