Hey folks, I know this subject has been covered before but I'm curious. Do you see any of the current dollar coins in circulation? Now I'm not a big fan of dollar coins but I have to wonder. I still have not seen ONE in circulation nor has my wife. I even asked her to pick up a roll at the bank one day so I could spend them and they didn't have any. It's not like I live in the middle of nowhere either. I'm on the "Indiana side" of Chicago. Heck, we're almost like Chicago suburbs. So you figure with Chicago, it's Illiniois burbs us folks here in the "region" and the fine folks on the "Wisconsin" side there are several million people. Still I see no dollar coins. Now I hear that people are seeing them in Chicago and it's burbs. So why not here. What's the scoop where you are?
Ha, you're joking right? None have made it out here (north of Scenic, SD) yet in circulation, probably never will either. You know, I've never held one in my hand either. Besides, I'm not one to go into the bank, bother the staff, and ask if they have rolls of these coins. Reason... I simply don't collect them. Take Care Ben
we have them here ..I live in eastern pa and i have got most of mine from sheetz..lol i have yet to find and from D..but have seen the first 4 so far..even started a book
Nope, wasn't joking this time Ben. I don't collect them either. Have no use for them. Of course I collect currency so I like my paper $1 denomination. I know I'm beating a dead horse here but I AM curious. My bank is fairly large with several branches. Two things you don't find are dollar and half dollar coins. Perhaps they understand the concept of demand. Supply is sure as hell available but if there is no demand why have them? Yup, clembo's typing out loud again.
Considering I use the vending machines at work a lot, I see a ton of them. I use $30-$40 worth a week. I do spend them outside the factory, too. I paid a guy with them to shovel my walk this winter even.
I've only seen about a half dozen of them. I'm a retail manager with a large customer base that uses more cash than checks or credit cards and I can only think of 2 occasions in the last year that someone used them. One guy had 3 Washingtons shortly after they came out, probably bought a roll took the primo example and spent the rest. And last week an older lady paid with 3 prez dollars and 3 half dollars. My bank always has plenty of rolls when they first come out, don't know how much they keep on hand after that though.
i hate them. only because they get ugly if you even look at them wrong. if your heart is not pure you can see the grade falling like a rock in water as you hold it in your fingers.
I have only received one Sacagawea dollar in change in the last 8 years. An office colleague received another Sacagawea dollar coin in change and did not know what to do with it, so I purchased the coin and spent it in a vending machine for a Coke. Another lady made a $13 and change purchase at my local post office vending machine and received 6 dollar coins in change which she did NOT want. I bought them from her and kept them and still have them. I have not a seen a single Presidential dollar in circulation. Mark Coral Springs, FL
My wife and I own a business and we have not received any as payment, but when I go half dollar hunting, my local banks have tons of them. A group of us went out to lunch and as one of my friends went to pay for her meal, she grabbed a few of these out of her purse and thought they were quarters. I quickly informed her that they were dollars. Needless to say, she was excited because now she had a few more dollars in her pocket than she expected.
I have bought them at the bank to spent, but I have yet to see one in any cash drawer (other than what I just gave) nor have I ever been given one in change. This would be in Metro Denver
Yes, if you define circulation as a few collector types picking them up at the bank, spending them, and then they go right back to the bank. Every time I look in the till at the local McDonald's there are two or three of them in there, but they never hand them back out in change.
I like to collect the presidential dollars only because they will be minted once and because I can get all the "P" mint dollar for face value. I keep five sets for each year. So at the very least I am saving 20.00 a year in dollar coin...haha. I will get at least a roll or two and pick out the best coins then spend the rest. I know most merchants hate the dollar coins of any type (non-silver that is), because they have no place in the register and also I suppose young people don't understand what they have, recieving as well as giving. I spent a few pres dollars a while back and the kid at the register just starred at them for a moment then looked at me and said; half dollars? I replied no they're dollar, it says so right on them. Coin machines at work will dispense dollar coins for the vending machines. You can get SBA's, Sac's or Presidentials. Our post office gives presidential as change as well. Banks order them for their customers, not because they want to fool with them, they really don't, least that's what they are saying.
I pay purchases of 20 dollars or less in currency and I can't even remember the last time a dollar coin was given to me in change. Lou
