Don't know if this has been brought up yet. Does anybody know when the Cherry pickers Guide 6th edition price will come back down to earth? I heard that some groups bought all the books they could find, and then raised the prices beyond peoples ability to pay. I have seen them going for over 300 dollars. I paid 39 dollars for the fifth edition years ago. Just wondering if anybody has heard anything.
Honestly... Nobody needs the Cherrypickers. Pre-Internet, it was a useful guide. Now, there is no need for it. Use this website for free, and it has far more varieties than CPG: http://varietyvista.com/index.htm
I do look at various sites, but being old school it's sometimes nice to have something in your hand LOL. I was just wondering why the high price and will it come down. Thanks for your input.
It's not gonna come down because it's officially out of print now. Whatever is out there is all there is and whoever has them wants an arm and a leg for the reference books. They have it on ebook versions for kindle and all that jazz "reasonably" priced from here on out.
I don't know anything about the Cherry Picker's Guide but I did find this blurb on-line that Whitman had planned to introduce a new edition at the canceled ANA show in Pittsburgh this year. I guessing the pandemic has delayed their plans. https://uscoinnews.com/2020/02/10/whitman-needs-your-help-for-latest-cherrypickers-guide/
As said already there are many online references that go much further in depth than any of the CPG's Another is http://doubleddie.com/
I mean I heard since 2019 that there was supposed to be a new edition of Vol II in the works published in 2020 but nothing of it actually being completed, in may 2019 they were in planing stages, in February (likely knew about covid) they said it would be likely August if they got the pictures they wanted. JT Stanton died Oct. 2018. It took a HECK OF A LOT OF digging, and more wrong answers, found from 2015 they were going to release the 6th edition on Sept 29th of 2015 at the Whitman expo..... Fairly certain that was the Vol I, which is now out of print. http://expo.whitman.com/news/cherry...ebrating the,Varieties of United States Coins. So, all in all, no idea if it ever even happens. this guy has a sixth edition on Ebay for a high price. it's Volume I, also out of print I'm guessing with the fifth editions and previous editions... https://www.ebay.com/i/133404878593...MIldv0m53h6wIVDW6GCh0NCgLdEAQYBSABEgJQI_D_BwE Even if a new edition comes in 2020, it's going to be the volume II, half dimes to modern dollars and bullion coins. I will be honest with you here. if you want them in book form (I do too) I suggest scouring all your used book stores because that's where you are going to find it for a reasonable price, if you are going to find it at all for a reasonable price. maybe Sixth edition or fifth edition Vol 1, and a 5th edition vol 2. maybe even older. yard sales, swap meets, ect.ect. ect. until they turn up and priced reasonably. Fairly certain they'd prefer everything as Ebook now a days rather than printing books. I prefer to have the books If I can, then even if the power is out I can hunt by flashlights.
Good morning, friends. Thanks to TD for bringing this conversation to my attention. I'm not aware of any group that cornered the market (or tried to corner the market) on copies of the sixth edition, volume I, of the Cherrypickers' Guide. I do check eBay and other venues from time to time, and nothing mysterious or odd has ever jumped out at me (e.g., I've never wondered, "Why are so many copies of that particular volume trickling out of Sheboygan, or Walla Walla, or where-have-you?"). Regarding the sixth edition, volume II, which covers half dimes through gold, plus commems, bullion, and U.S./Philippines: We're working toward a late 2020 or early 2021 rollout. Bill Fivaz and I did a presentation at the Atlanta ANA National Money Show in February, which of course now feels like an eternity ago! This upcoming volume will be dedicated to the memory of J.T. Stanton.
I recently bought both volumes of the fifth edition for my Kindle for a little over $22. I prefer the ebook because I can easily take it with me wherever I go. Yes, there are internet sites that are maybe better, but if you're someplace that doesn't have internet access or you just don't care, I think it's worth it.
Good day! thank you for the input. Question though, does Whitman have any thought/intention/plan of producing more physical copies of the 6th edition Vol. 1 in the near future or is that completely done? Maybe a reprint run to coincide with the release of the sixth ed. Vol.2? I'd like to get both in physical copies but have struggled since mid last year to find Vol.1 "reasonably priced". Be nice if Whitman did a reprint of Vol. 1 so those that want it can get a set. At this point even Abebooks is asking $400 for a used copy and Amazon isn't much better. cheapest one I saw sold on ebay this year for $122.00 and that's not the norm at all of the few that pop up. correct me if I'm wrong but Whitman was selling them for around $40.00 as a list price.. Anyways, I hope for a reprint, or I luck into a copy at the used book store *fingers crossed* Thanks, be blessed.
I looked at Powells bookstore site in Portland OR and it shows six available but is not clear on which editions or volumes they are. Taking the one of two ISBNs associated with one of those offered, I found what appears to be fifth and sixth V1 available at from a $100 to $450 at ABEbooks. ISBN 9780794848330 if you're interested..
Thanks everyone for your insights, and thank you Dentuck2000 for that update. I will keep my eyes peeled.
I brought a 6th edition volume one.. I regret not buying another just to have but the digital copy works well
