It's been a little while since I was actively collecting shield nickels, but I believe this is a FS-301. This is exactly the reason that the design was changed to remove the rays; it was simply too difficult to achieve a complete strike. Just guessing here, but would limit it to MS-63 due to strike weakness.
Nice example of a 1866 RPD it's not going to grade higher than an xf through . The wear on the high points stars and Gules. Notice the lines on the Gules are broken. next the stars are not full nice lines that bisected the stars are worn. I'm not saying it's not a great example of an 66 shield just pointing out how a grader would judge it. Yes it has nice fields with original color. Yes it's an RPD but not an RPD listed in cpg. There's a lot to explore in shields. Frank stated "weak strike " well most were as each die would be wore out between 10,000-15,000 strikes! Next the alloy and thickness .750 copper/.250 nickel 20.5 mm weight 5 grams. Compared to 21.2 mm of the Liberty series same weight same medal comp. As for the variety it's not in cpg for this nickel yes some close but go head to head with the listed you'll see its not. For a few months now I've been cherry picking shields what I have found is a treasures trove of variety coins. I will post some of my finds in days to come. Some are spot on to varieties found in the cherry pickers guide...others are sub sets of rpd, ddo's and some just off the charts. Check out shieldnickels.net you'll find that there are many varieties still not found or just 1 found! I must admit I'm totally hooked on these nickels. The more I explore the more I find..... the more I find the more I search...... warning shields can be habit forming!
I forgot this thread. Bowers graded this a 63 about 25 years back and it came back as a 63. I bought it because of the date. I'll be at Fun. I come in on Wed. and out on Sunday.
Nice repunched date. I have seen this one somewhere or one just like it. The weakness of the strike looks identical to the one I say. To me it is upper AU or lower MS. I really like the re-cut date.
