Hello all, My father found a fake $1,000 dollar Confederate note (Serial 297). Although it is fake, we were wondering if it is worth anything.
if it is a fake, probably not. Still an interesting piece, but not worth the paper its printed on when fake.
How do you know the note is fake? We will need more information to properly answer your question. Post photos of the note if you can. To partially answer your question - maybe, maybe not. If the note is a contemporary counterfeit (meaning it was made when notes like it were in use and created to either spend or to wreck the CSA economy) it will be collectible. If it is a modern fake, reproduction, counterfeit it will probably be next to worthless. I looked through my reference book on Counterfeit Confederate Currency and I do not find any $1,000 notes listed. Keep in mind that $1,000 was a LOT of money back then. Please post some photos or at least give us a description of the note - dates, images used, colors of ink, etc. Right now we have absolutely nothing to go on.
Referenced as "T-1" the Montgomery Issued $1000 Confederate States of America Note. Do not know too much more about it except that it was first issued in 1861 Here is a cool link that will perhaps help you out! Oh, with a little research you will find that the SN #297 was widely used in copies made of different paper types. http://www.crutchwilliams.com/BogusCSA_RoTx.html If you are still not certain, take it to a Dealer or TPGC for verification! Good job, Rickie. I did a little more research and discovered the following (from the book Collecting Confederate Paper Money / Field Edition 2008): The Type1 (T-1) $1,000 note "is the only Confederate Treasury Note issued in a $1,000 denomination." 607 were issued 118 are known to survive Serial Number 297 is one of the 118 known survivors For some reason this counterfeit is not listed in A Guide Book of Counterfeit Confederate Currency by Tremmel.
HoBo... Perhaps that is why it was so widely copied and sold as fakes! Can you imagine what the real note must be worth!! Mind Numbing figure indeed! RickieB
The reason it is not listed in the book is that it is not a counterfeit contemporary to the Civil War years. It is a post-war, probably 20th century, replica or fake. Counterfeits were made with the intention to decieve. Fakes are just souveniers. Cheers.
good point, i just assumed it was a modern fake based on the 297 serial, but it still could have been an earlier note... i should have thought of the earlier posibility
I just found a real example in f-vf and it list at $27,500.00... All or most of all real notes will have punch hole cancellations!! RickieB
