Hi I was checking an Ebid auction and the seller is offering "unsearched" wheat/indian penny rolls of 25 The claim is that they are unsearched and you could find any date "even mercurys mixed in" Ive seen these rolls on Ebay and am wondering if anyone here has any experiences buying these rolls. One good coin on each end the rest junk? Anyone find any good coins in these? The only reason Im thinking of bidding is that on one roll are two decent coins I could use. Also only $7 per roll Your opinions appreciated

    Junk.

It's been discussed on many threads on this and other forums. It's a marketing/sales gimmick used by unscrupulous dealers. You will be disappointed. Save your money and buy the coin(s) you need.

    Oh... Welcome!!!

Absolutely pure bilcruddy! Heck, the seller doesn't even know the difference between a cent and a penny!

yea what kinda person calls its a cent! it says "50 pennies" right on the roll!

    some people.

its so offensive and matters so much, its worth making a post, even a thread about it!

I agree--this seller is an idiot. The OP says they are rolls of 25 cents, not 50 pennies! Maybe the seller should consult with what's her name (or misnomer)......

In elementary school, there was a spoiled brat in our class who would never stop pouting if he didn't get his way. Of course, it came as no surprise that his eyes were brown, too!

Never believe the word unsearched on auction websites. In some way, yes it's unsearched. But the coins in the roll were definately searched a few times in their life. Oh, and never buy from a seller who calls it a "shotgun roll".

I haven't bought any of those 'shotgun' rolls you speak of, but if you go through the feedback of many of those sellers, you will see a recurring theme... 'nicely staged, 2 nice coins on the end, the rest junk"... The thing I can't figure is why they still give positive feedback when they feel they were duped... I guess they are trying not to get dinged in return, so the best advice is to avoid them like the plague... Another observation: What generation of knuckleknobs in the history of banking, finance, or numismatics has rolled MIXED rolls of dimes and cents?.. I can buy that a really old roll of cents might include IH, wheat, and even FE, but no post-depression grandpa ever sat around rolling coins with Mercury dimes on the end, and if they were sent off to a coin-rolling company, they would have been sorted there as well... Also, as a collector, and seller, if I ever came across one of the mystical ESTATES with all the shotgun rolls with Winged Liberty dimes, IH, FE's and wheats mixed in, every roll would be opened and searched before I got back to my truck... There is ZERO chance that the rolls haven't been rifled through countless times, and it is unscrupulous at best to sell them as 'unsearched'...

Remember when eBay stopped allowing sellers to list a grade in the title if the coin was raw? Perhaps they should ban the use of the word "unsearched" completely!

If there not searched then why are there dimes in there? Maybe the seller did not search them but the previous owners did or the seller just randomly grabbed the coins and stuffed them down the roll. Maybe
they can just tell there is a dime in it because if you can not tell what a Mercury dime is than you are not an expert coin collector. If your a dealer
and you had no clue what a Merc was your an absolute idiot unless you only deal in a particular area.

Ebay modified the feedback system a while back so a seller cannot retaliate by giving a buyer negative feedback - only positive or none at all. So I agree it would be strange for a buyer to leave positive feedback in that situation.

Shotgun is what you will want to use on yourself if you spend too much on something like this. Un searched ? By whom lol? Remember, in this hobby if the deal sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

There's virtually NO unsearched wheat cents in the world anymore and DEFINATELY not on ebay. Don't waste your money.

^i got some rolls that sat in my girls attic since at least, 1949(when her great grandfather died). so they have not been searched for a very long time. but this is more of a rare situation and most people that would find such a thing would not sell them on ebay for a few bucks.

i treat these rolls like gold, and only open a few a week(call me crazy, but it keeps the fun going). i am running low though:(.

so i still don't know how people can believe they are getting unsearched rolls. they really believe the seller didn't open them to see if there are any thousand or few hundred dollar coins in them, and all there rolls of cents have mercury dimes at the end? i know i never rolled a roll of change and put a more expensive coin at the ends..

i could see bidding on them knowing you are getting a bunch of commons and paying $2-4, but not paying $8 and up, that is crazy! even with the *free* silver dime..

basically wasting your time on foreign stuff, but you did mention a couple foreign coins that have some silver, so they are atleast worth silver value... 10 to 15 bucks, but overall, you are probably spinning your wheels...
