So, I have new coins to examine. I was looking at 1982. I looked it up, only to discover Brass pennies are worth a bunch, even modern ones. Could anyone tell me the weight difference between the 2 types? Thanks.

I think you mean bronze, not brass. Pennies were never made of brass. Also, when people talk about bronze pennies and copper pennies, they are referring to the same coins.

Both bronze and zinc pennies were made in 1982. Are you asking about these?

There may be something about a different alloy mix instead of your standard 95/5 copper cents. Check the search box on this site.

^^^^ Well that is a special case.
I do recall something about cents that were an 88/12 89/11 mix instead of 95/5.

You all are so knowledgeable. Thanks for putting up with me. Of course, I meant bronze. Sorry. I was keeping the 3.1 1982 pennies, but was so overrun by them that I couldn't keep them. Guess I gave away something good.

Brass is bronze without tin. Bronze is copper, zinc and tin. Therefore brass is just copper and zinc.

Brass was used in cents from 1944-1946 (some argue that there is a trace of tin in these coins therefore these might be considered bronze).

Brass was used in cents from 1963-1982.

DOESN'T ANYONE HAVE A RED BOOK???

    -- After 1982, U.S. cents weigh 2.5 grams.

    -- Before 1982, they weigh 3.1 grams.

Not really. You might get $1.50 per roll on eBay.

Yes, but you beat me to it.

The only 1982 brass cent "worth a bunch" is the 1982 D small date. The other 1982 brass and zinc cents are all common.

Yup, like CoinCorgi pointed out, 1963 to 1982 cents were brass.

Whoa, whoa.... that's not a smart move. While certainly preferable to certain other websites, this place isn't anywhere close to being unquestionably trustworthy.

Although the advice given is often quite good and there's undoubtedly a number of very decent and knowledgeable folks here, a wise approach would be to consider it to be worth exactly what you've paid for it. Trust if you want, but verify, verify, verify....

That's a pretty good ratio too 3:1 verify to trust.

So much misinformation out there about 1982 cents .... best just to avoid all the youtube and clickbait websites about it.

or just search CT for 1982 in the titles and you'll see the misinformation from all the newbie "searchers".

It sounds like it is painted or plated after it left the mint. Worth only one cent.

You should post a picture though, just to be sure.
