i got a box of nickels from a bank. $100.00 dollar worth of nickels. that's is 50 roll. i wonder why that box have so many holes on it. is it air tite is better?. or the box need air?. anyone?. thanks.
Banks get their coins from various armored car services, which roll and box them from huge Mint bags. Perhaps the particular company that boxed those coins is saving cardboard by punching holes in their boxes. In many years of employment as a bank lawyer, I never saw any "holey" boxes, but perhaps the banks I worked for didn't get their coins from the same source as your bank. For monetary purposes, coins don't "need" either air, or absence of air. For numismatic purposes, airtites slow down the tarnishing ("toning" ) of coins, and protect against corrosion from high humidity.
The boxes I get also have holes. On the box it says to make sure all the rolls are in the box before opening. The holes are there so you can make sure there is a roll in each hole so you know the box is full.
holes for probing. but then, if we are the collectors. the coins inside will be tarnished faster. should we transfer those coins to another airtitie box for keeping?. but then, people like original box too. so what should i do?.
I need too save up some money to get a box of Halves. Probably will try to get some nickels today. We'll see. I never have seen holes in mine. Would I get extra money on ebay if I sold it and said it was a "holey" box? lol j/k j/k Phoenix
holes in a box yes, indeed the purposed is for us to check all 50 roll intact. there were 50 holes in a box. the company is n.f. string & son.
holes within box finally, i was able to get some box from the bank without the holes. but actually with holes looks bettter. but for numismatic purposes. better not.
:goofer: :goofer: When I was a kid they put them little chicks in a box with holes in them at easter time.
The holes are so that the coins can breathe and not suffocate. Don't you guys have any pity on those poor coins?
and most did not make it past a couple weeks. had couple ducks that were around for 2 years then my dad sent them to a farm
best solution i think it is better to take out all the coins from the box. and keep it safe elsewhere with silica gel.
sheesh, guys. The holes are there so the tellers can see if it is a full box, if any (rolls) are missing they return it unopened for an exchange.
