I got a strange piece of metal in with some Barber quarters. It is the same size as a quarter, but looks like it is copper. It is blank on both sides. It weighs 6.5 grams. Any ideas:confused:

    Thanks, Charlie

A little too heavy to be a quarter planchet, and way too much weight for a clad planchet with missing outer layers. [IMG]

Since it appears to have reeding and rims, it may be that it was a blank for a counterfeit quarter - just waiting to have the silver plating added.

I live in an area where there are numerous factories. Some years back there was a wave of individuals in some that produced washers, bolts, nuts, etc. that would make slugs out of sheets of different materials to see if they would work in vending machines. Many of them worked in pay phones easily. Many were used by their kids in gum ball and candy machines. If they worked, more were made. I understand, can't be proven, that these individuals have been stopped from this procedure. You may have one of thier many attemps.
