I'm finding my regular handheld magnifying glass just doesn't cut it.

I'm thinking about switching to something else, but what? I'd like one that's lighted.

Also, I'm considering a 'desk' unit that attaches to the desk and also contains a light.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Reb

The desk unit with light is by far the best. Get one with at least a 10 inch lens & fluorcent light to make you healthy, happy, wealthy and wise. :p

I don't know about using a fluorescent light. Most people are sensitive to the flicker and color of fluorescents. IMO, it's best to use an incandescent bulb that is as close to daylight as possible to avoid eye strain and headache.

Are these the type that a nurse in school would use to check for head lice???

I've also been looking for a good desk magnifier/light. The ones I've seen on amazon have bad reviews and the one on wizard coin supplies has too low a magnification. I'd like to have somewhere between 5x and 10x.

But I haven't been able to find any online. Does anyone know of a good brand or model off hand?

Yes I am also looking for one. I went to harbor freight.com and looked and they have 3 or 4 desk top but only 3 diopler or ter or what ever magnification . They do have one with a one inch deal in it thats higher like 10 or 12 X. Then they have one that's 2x that's higher than a 3 diopter or what ever. So what you guys are saying is largest with the most mag? What do you folks think of this one.

1.75X is not a whole lot better than the naked eye.

I have owned a few of the desktop type but never found one that was very helpful for me. The ones I had were only 2 to 3X and were tough on the eyes. A large lens of any quality is going to be very costly. The most I paid was about $60 and the lens was still not good for me.
