Gaithersburg Coin Exchange: I go into the store today looking to buy 1914D and a 1931S penny. After having to wait for 6 people for a total of 30 minutes, I ask to see there selection of those wheat pennies. The clerk then tells me that they won't help me, because they are too busy. He then asks the manager and the owner says that they wont help me out! I guess people who buy silver and gold are more important than collectors like myself. You can take what you want from this, but beware if you are a collector since you may just get turned down for business.

You aren't the first person who has reported such issues at the Gaithersburg Coin Exchange. Didn't you Google them prior to going?

There are 4 dealers in Northern Virginia - a hop across the bridge - that may interest you:

Cameo Coins and Collectibles - Vienna
Mom and pop store. Friendly. Negotiable. Slabs. Limited classics, variety.
    Mon-Sat.

    Alexandria Coin Sales - Annandale

Run by Joe Gallo. Nice guy, very fair. Hours are only Fridays and Saturdays.
Variety of mostly classics and currency. Limited foreign. Bullion.
Always call ahead to make sure he's open

Kennedy's Stamps and Coins - Springfield

    Run by John Kennedy. Negotiable.
Variety of mostly classics and stamps. Lots of foreign. Limited currency, some confederate and obsolete.
Always call ahead to make sure he's open

Midas Touch / AKA formerly Century Stamps and Coins

Google them prior to heading there.
If you decide to go there, always call ahead to make sure they're open

I ran into that kind of business a few times. I have a site that you would like if you are looking for a 31-S and 14-D Wheaties.

    http://www.nfccoins.com/

Matter of fact, I got my 14-D from NFC. Fast shipping to be all the way in Florida. Like 7 days to get to Honolulu, others take 2 weeks.

You would think they would want to help you since you were wanting to buy a 1914-D and 1931-S wheat cent. Those dates are not cheap.

About four years ago I was up in the Twin Cites and stopped at Lake State Rare Coin & Bullion in Bloomington to buy some Silver Washington Quarters. While I was picking out the dates I wanted the clerk told me they were closing early and that I had to hurry up. They were open until 5, this happened at about 3. Needless to say I have not been back since.

I have suggested before in a couple of threads to lodge a formal complaint with the A.N.A.

Can't believe a retail store would do that to a customer. Very sad to hear.

I agree with this statement.... makes me think that they didn't have the coins in their shop, and were too embarrassed to tell you they didn't have them.

Apparently none of you were collecting back in late 1979/early 1980. If the metals stay high or keep going up you will find this behavior will become commonplace in all the brick and mortar coin shops as it did back then. These are business and a business is there to make money. You say you guess the people buying and selling gold and silver are more important. They ARE. During the time an employee spends showing you those cents, and assuming you buy one, he could be earning ten times as much profit for the business dealing with the gold and silver people. I understand that as a collector you find it annoying (I know I did back in 1979) but I can't fault the business for doing so.

I'm so old that getting a chance to hang out at the "Hobby Shop" was a treat!

(We didn't have a shop that just did $)

Getting ignored meant they trusted you.

And it was a chance to rummage through their mags and finally picking out one you wanted to reread.:)

Some places you get swarmed with too much help. It's just as bad.

I go to a coin shop and get a feel of how they are. Then I give them my business or not. I like China Lake Coins here in Maine, but there are others I am not going to go out of my way to buy at. They are either going to treat me like a customer or they aren't going to have my trade. I buy things, so it behooves them to pay attention to me.

I would ask that whoever is responsible for this file that they change the blog. The initial list states to "Avoid this store if you live around Washington DC!!" but instead of putting the shop your asking to avoid it states "Kennedy's Stamps and Coins -- Springfield. Run by John Kennedy" and if someone doesn't open up the file, they'll think it is my shop to avoid. Whoever is in charge, please correct this soonest. Thank you. John Kennedy, Owner Kennedy's Stamps & Coins, Inc.

You may want to read those posts, made almost four years ago, again. (By the way, this is not somebody's blog but a forum site where lots of members contribute.) The list of four dealers in #3 starts with the words "There are 4 dealers in Northern Virginia - a hop across the bridge - that may interest you". Does not exactly sound negative to me.

The person who posted about your shop, was recommending your shop as being a good one !

I'm not referring to this site; guess I'm computer illerate. I found this site googling my store's name on page 6 in the 71-84 items. Yes on this insert to that file it is good as well it should be. I take pride in what I do. If you google Kennedy's Stamps & Coins; go to page 6 and look at the item "Avoid this store if you live around Washington, DC" you'll see what I mean. Sorry for being so illiterate on computers but for me they're only good to play hearts and spider solitary. Thank you for the reply.

John, we don't have any control over Google. What I would bet money on is that you're the only one who's ever dug that deep into a search about your shop's name. Thing is, if we remove a good recommendation about your shop from what I presume is a customer of yours, it would likely do you more harm than good.
