I'm a Disney fan but I don't know if I'll buy these. If I did it would be for fun. Still, this confuses me. The official Autrailian mint... printing DISNEY coins? http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalogue/disney-silver-coins.aspx They are officially liscensed products, too! They have gold ones but they are out. I think I'll still sleep at night (I have no faith in the gold market right now until it looks somewhat reasonable given a 10/20 year cycle adjusted for inflation). Then again, for the prices they are charging for the silver rounds it might as well be gold
No doubt they will sell tens of thousands; their market research is terrific. And the great Disney conundrum still unanswered: Pluto and Goofy are both dogs. Pluto walks on four feet, Goofy on two feet; Goofy wears pants, Pluto doesn't. Goofy talks, Pluto might? However, I guess if you're going to walk on two feet, you'd better wear pants.
It must be good market research, selling proof sets for $150+ And we still pay 3.5c for each penny we make :\
Oh, please. The mint that issues Australian circulation coins is the Royal Australian Mint. The Perth Mint is owned/controlled by the state of Western Australia, and produces collector and bullion coins only. These Disney "coins" are issued by the "New Zealand Mint" (which does not make or issue New Zealand's coins by the way) and minted in Perth on behalf of ... Niue. Christian
The Perth Mint milks the precious metals market for all it's worth. Here's their famous one metric ton GOLD "coin" -- 2,205 (American) pounds. You need a beeeeg forklift to steal it.
Thanks, I didn't know that. The only Australian proof sets I have are the actual currency, and I like Austrailian currency. I was searching Google and it brought me there. They *do* sell actual coinage on the site but maybe that's purchased? The actual mint's site has proof sets but they are still asking for 140 AUD which I think is ridiculous. US proof sets are about 30 USD from the mint. Why is this stuff so expensive? Then again, I can find older proof sets from Austrailia for 20-30 USD, depending on the date.
Yeah, but if my sons sees these he will want them, my wife will ask me "why don't you ever buy any dumb coins others might want' etc etc. So, there is a market for these, although maybe under duress. I for one am going to hide any mention of these from my family.
Good plan. Plus my original premise stands: "...No doubt they will sell tens of thousands; their market research is terrific..." It doesn't MATTER if Disneyana fell off a cliff, there's a new generation hungry for stuff. When the crunch comes, they'll be worth more than you paid, provided you strip off all that paint.
