Well, the secret is out. I have this coin on its way. No need for lengthy biography, everyone knows Augustus' life story. Feel free to comment and post your own coins of Augustus. AUGUSTUSAR silver denarius. Struck 2 BC - 14 AD. CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE, laureate head of Augustus right. Reverse - AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT, C L CAESARES in exergue, Caius and Lucius Caesars standing facing, shield and spears between them; simpulum and lituus above, X in middle field (Pd rather than the more usual b9). RSC 43. RCV 1597. 17mm, 3.6g. A scarcer variant with inverted lituus & simpulum, as well as the X in the field between the boys.
Surprisingly I got it for less than another with more wear which I lost at auction a few months ago. Far from my most expensive coin...these particular ones are rather common for Augustus (or so I've been told).
Well done! Beautiful example. Well struck and centered. Love the scarcity too...shields, x, inverted pontificates... I have one similar to yours - I freed it from a slab long ago (no cool 'X' on reverse, tho): RI Augustus AR Denarius struck 2 BC-14 AD Caius and Lucius Caesars stdg shield spear S 1578 NGC4276216-007.JPG
Another way to identify the scarce varieties is the relative position of the shields On the scarcer ones the right shield is in front of the left shield
Nice coin. Augustus liked to have his grandkids on coins. I only have pictures of my grandson. I do have a coin (wedding medal) with my daughter...
Funny, I was just looking at Augustus' coins online. Was thinking about picking up some of the Roman Caesars.
Nice coin @Sallent, you're correct that it does seem to be the most common denarius type for Augustus (in general, though you have a scarcer variant). Here's one of my Augustan denarii, with a Signis Receptis reverse commemorating the diplomatic recovery of Roman standards from the Parthians:
that's a nice one, several nice one's posted, and i didn't know about the variant shields till now, thanks to Orfew. guess i got the run of the mill type.
A nice Augustus denarius Sallent. That type is on my short list. Here is one of mine. I don't have many of my coins photographed but need to get on that.
I'm honestly considering getting a Titus, Tiberius, and Nero this year, which would only leave me the other Emperors of 69 CE (minus Vespasian whom I already have) and Caligula and Claudius for next year or two to complete a 12 Caesars in silver. I may have to look at provincial silver for Caudius though, and bite the bullet and fork over the cash for Caligula. Would it still be considered a 12 Caesars Set if some of the coins are provincial silver instead of Imperial silver?
That parked chariot @aide posted is definitely a winner!!! Wonderful posts guys!! I grabbed the scarcer inverted type from FORVM..... with the X that no one can explain:
Of course it would. You can build the set anyway you like. I decided on Imperial silver but that does not mean this is the correct way. The most important thing is to enjoy the process of assembling a collection that you like. Have fun with it. I can tell you from personal experience that putting this together was a lot of fun. Do not let anyone tell you that your way is the wrong way...there is no such thing.
