My graded coin by NGC just says “AU Details” but doesn’t have a number attached to it. Does this mean it could range from AU50-AU59?
I don't think they do that anymore. They got a lot of hate mail over that back in the day. At least now, ya get something for your money..........
There's still a few things like PVC that will come back in a body bag but yea it's a pretty small list these days unless you tell them not to holder details coins.
It's a problem coin. It's been cleaned or altered in some way. The wear on the coin is AU range but the coin has been damaged.
The grading companies very rarely damage coins, so if a coin comes back as "___ Details", then it is probably damage done before it was graded. It doesn't seem like you have too much experience in the hobby, so feel free to ask as many questions as you like on this forum. People always answer really quickly, and it could save or make you money. By the way, AU grades go AU50, AU53, AU55, and AU58. Don't ask me why it skips like that, it just does.
I just started about 4-5 months ago and continue to do research online. I still have a ton of questions and cointalk definitely helps out with questions that I may have and appreciate everyone’s input. There’s so much more to coins that I originally thought!
Because originally it was just AU-50 and the next step was MS-60. then the market decided that some coins were better than 50 but not as good as 60 and 55 was added. they there were some coins that were better than 50 but not good enough to call 55, and some that were "just a hairbreath away form being MS and 53 and 58 were added. (55 was halfway between 50 and 60. When they added to next two numbers they went "halfway" again. That would be 52.5 and 57.5. Round up to eliminate the decimal point and you get 53 and 58.) Same reason MS was originally 60, 65, and 70, then 63 and 67 were added, then 64, then all 11 numbers and then + grades so now there are close to 22 "numbers" of MS. marketing, grasping at any straw to justify charging a higher price.
Your coin has been messed with at some point. Never should have been sent in for grading as it will never receive a straight grade. Details is details. It looks like but it can't be proved.
Ask away...that's what we are here for. You may find a member or two who gets annoyed by "newbie" questions that have been asked 100 times before...but most of us love to chat about coins and help bring new collectors into the hobby. Don't be afraid to ask and if someone comments in a negative way...just ignore them.
