I am thinking about putting a safe in my attic. Anyone have any experience with this? I am thinking that key issues could include heat and cold. Could storing coins in a safe in a non climate controlled area be a problem? I am thinking that the damage might be greater to the packaging that the coins.

installation and weight distribution may be an issue depending on size. Also in case of fire the the safe would need to to be shock rated

Depends on your climate. If you live where it's cold most of the time it probably wouldn't be a problem. But if it gets hot I think you may have issues, especially if humidity is involved. Not to mention you may risk having it fall through into the house. The supports up there most likely aren't made to hold massive amounts of weight in a small area.

You also have to factor in weight of a safe with coins...

Wouldn't the extremities of hot and cold cause condensation and begin to corrode the coins? Or the interaction with a variable climate on your coin storage containers (flips, albums, rolls, etc) and your coins. It just sure sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Umm... no. It's a really, really bad idea! You named the key problems in your questions, which should have been enough to convince you NOT to put coins in such a place. Who cares about the packaging? You collect coins not packages and coins and packages don't need to be put in the same place. Coins in the safe only. Packages take up precious space. Also consider insects and pests in the attic. Attics are not necessarily secure either and you just told the interweb about your hiding place. :secret:

An attic is a house's "breathing area". You will experience extreme ranges in temp and humidity conditions. As Krispy said, bad idea. Better is a Basement where it is cool and humidity can be controlled much better by several different methods.

Also consider a fire rated safe of at least (minimum) 1 hr.

    Good luck..

At times, you could fry an egg in my attic space. Better to fry an egg than a coin (s)......
