Are your clad State Quarters toning?

I've been searching pocket change for the last SQ's we need for a P & D set. When I went to put two I found into our Dansco 7143 album I noticed some of the earliest coins are turning the color of a new Presidential Dollar. Coins closest to the binding have toned the most. The album is stored in the drawer of a spare dresser with other albums and loose coins and not exposed to temperature extremes or humidity.

Is anyone else seeing this happen too?

Yes. Coins will tone in most albums. My quarters and nickels have both toned in my Danscos and I even have then in the protective sleeve. The nickels have a nice look to them but some of the quarters are ugly ...lol.

I just checked. None of the clad quarters (nor the circulated silver ones) in my Dansco's are toning. They are, FWIW, stored in the corrosion-inhibiting folders.

I have a set of Ikes that are stunningly rainbow toned, however. They were not stored similarly, and the set is much, much older.

I have a bunch of state quarter. I have them in cheaper albums without toning issues. I guess I'm lucky (or less lucky if you like toned coins).

Is the dresser real wood or fiberboard composite? Either one can produce acids ( tannic is the case of many woods) or sulfur compounds in making and compositing some fiberboards. Plywood can have some of both depending on manufacture. If you are going to put into a dresser drawer, I would suggest a hard plastic food grade sealable container to put the albums in ( OR) zip lock bags will do quite well also.

The cardboard containing albums are the prime suspect, but don't sell the dresser drawer short.

No toning with my state quarters--- yet. They are in 4 1/8 X 9 1/2 white envelopes 1n brown cardboard boxes. Some are in 2 x 2's and some are loose in the envelopes. one state, one envelope.

I just took a look at an album my wife put together. They are in a Littleton coin album and a lot of them have started toning.

  11. I've been putting mine into a Littleton album since 1999. From 99-last year that was the closest I came to coin collecting. And the answer to your collection is YES, they are toning! Some more then others. Most are a yellowish color, however some have some shades of blue. For some reason Arkansas is blue, brown, gold, green and yellowish gold. I don't know why that one coin has toned so much.

Before I really became a collector, I thought it was just the yellowish paper and the reflective nature of the coins that made it look like they were yellow. Then I learned better. Then, when I was putting last year's in, I paid more attention and they picked up a yellowish tinge by the time the next issue came out!

I am glad I found out that way, by collecting state quarters only for so long. I do NOT like toning, so I learned not to put my coins in folders. It may have saved thousands of coins!! I store my year sets in the plastic holders that have a space for each denomination. I only have a few for now but eventually my entire collection will be in them, for now the rest are stored in plastic (NON-PVC) trading card holders.
