Hello, I recently started looking through my loose change and found a couple of 1970 quarters that looks unusual and was hoping to get some input on them. The first one I know is in rough shape and has some corrosion and damage. What looked interesting is the vertical lines in the background, and raised areas between America and Dollar. I’m curious if this was maybe a printing issue, or just wear and tear over the years. The second one is in slightly better condition and it looks like there is doubling on the United States. Any info would be much appreciated!
Coins are struck not printed. The lines on the first quarter are Post Mint Damage (PMD). Something scraped across the surface and created those lines. The doubling on the second quarter is know as either Machine Doubling, Mechanical Doubling or Strike Doubling. https://www.error-ref.com/machine-doubling/ Machine doubling is not the same as a Doubled Die and they are typically worth only face value. Exact what Mr. Numismatist said. Welcome to CT. Paper money is printed but coins are minted. Both at different facilities.
Thank you for the clarification! I’m just learning all the terminology so I appreciate any and all feedback.
