I want to learn how to grade coins on a real (not approximate) scale. I wonder if there are any books, computer programs that teach you this on a college level. Either at low or no cost, or if it does cost if it provides tests, and up to date information
Don't know if this is "college level" but one of the courses is just on grading http://www.money.org/Content/Naviga...ducation/NumismaticDiplomaProgram/default.htm
There is no such thing as a "real" scale. There is no such thing as a single accepted grading standard. There are only many different sets of grading standards. The ANA has their own set of standards. NGC has thei own set of grading standards. PCGS has their own set of grading standards. ANACS, ICG, every TPG there is has their own individual and different set of grading standards. So which one do you want to learn ? For that matter, which one is "real" ? And there are no classes besides those offered by the ANA. Yes, you can take those classes at home on your own computer. Or you can take them in person at the ANA. But there is no such thing as "college level".
Since grading is highly subjective, and the opinions of the TPGs is just that, an opinion which you pay for, there is nothing exact about grading.
O.K., I knew the ANA offered these classes at their conventions, as I am a member. And I also know they are priced way out of most collector's bubget. But, I wasn't aware they were available on h=the web. Has anyone done these on their computer, and know what they cost? I've heard great things about these courses.
They are not "on the web". But they do offer do it yourself courses that you do at home. The courses are the same, you just don't have the advantage of having a teacher present nor do you get to view coins in hand like you do if you take the course "at" the ANA.
Any idea on the cost of these courses? My income has taken a beating the last two years, so cost is a definate factor. Thanks in advance!
I am just saying there isn't a book titled "Introduction to Coin Grading: The Sheldon Scale" if not there should be
The ANA has a distance learning course on grading but, as Doug stated, as good as it is it is not the same as being in a class with an instructor and hundreds of examples of coins to look at.
Well then maybe our Cointalk "Top" doggs could create a book in their free time? Just a combine set of knowlege of the Best of the Best @ CT??? We could make it a Wiki side page? Just saying we have a bunch of knowledgeable people here, and I would love it if they shared some of what they knew
Redbook has a section about the grading scale, what has to be seen on the coin to achieve a certain grade, etc. It's not lengthy, but it is basic none the less.
There are several threads here on CT which are very helpful, with the same caveat Hobo and Doug have given ~ that you really need the coin in hand and be able to tilt and loupe if necessary and differences will be found. Unfortunately photography isn't good at that. Search for RLM's and others threads on grading a coin. Perhaps those who have interesting threads of such will post links. Jim
I think the guess the grades threads on this forum are very educational. I plan on participating in the next one. It looks like a lot of fun. Mark
I just received my courses in the mail a couple weeks ago. It was $400 for all of them.(you don't have to buy all at once, but there is a discount if you do) There is an introduction to coin collecting, grading and counterfeit detection, grading mint state coins, a book on modern minting procedures and 2 dvds that I haven't watched yet about grading and counterfeit detection. I am reading the Introduction now and although alot of the beginning is basic collecting info, I am learning alot I didn't know about the history of coins. Until I can afford a trip to Colorado, reading books and looking at coins at shows and online is my plan of action.
Books are easy, there are several. But you didn't ask about books, you asked about college level courses or classes. First of all try looking here in the Numismatic Resources section - http://www.cointalk.com/t14179/ The best book there is on grading is this one - http://www.amazon.com/Official-American-Numismatic-Association-Standards/dp/0794819931 But there are literally dozens of books written on grading coins. All you have to do is Google it to find all you want.
Your best bet then would be to post in the "Errors Forum", that's the easiest way for error experts here to help
There's my "go-to" book that the ANA put out specifically for grading, every coin made with every possible grade featured... including pictures. Need more info/pics, PM me.
