..jewelry settings worth much? Know what I mean? Something like a gold coin that is kinda rare but in a pendant or ring. Any value to the coin? Thanks, Jim
once a coin is damaged it loses value, and placing it in a ring say or pendent is oten done with solder. Some jewellery allow the coin to sit in a clasp or holder that dont damage it. but any coin that is worn daily and walked about with is gonna be worth less than one sitting in a case thats never touched. everything is worth at least bullion value though and if the coin is only a bullion coin like most gold sovereigns that are put in rings it wont affect the value too much
Sure, they can be. All the same valuation criteria applies to coins made into jewelry as does to those that are not. Supply and demand, and condition are what matter most. Because damage often results from making coins into jewelry, the coins are often devalued, but this isn't always the case. I've even seen some coins that were worth a lot more after they were made into jewelry. There's really no "yes or no" answer, as each piece is different.
Depending on the coin - some that are used in jewelry do still have a value above and beyond bullion content. But I will say this - I have yet to ever see any coin used in jewelry that had a value of even 50% of what it would be had it not been used in jewelry. As a general rule of thumb - it is 25% or less - assuming that this value exceeds bullion value alone.
Even if the coin is in a clasp type setting, or a bezel type setting , one of the things that devalue them is cleaning, when looked at under magnification tiny hair lines can be seen if they have been abrasively cleaned
