Ran across this on an auction site but know nothing about it. 1929 Ten Unit American Bank Note, test note with ink smear error. Any information would be nice.

These are dated 1929 but were printed as test notes in the 1980’s by the American Bank Note Company testing an imbedded security thread. Some you find are raw and some graded. I’ve also seen different combinations of colors printed on the front & rear of the notes. I have one floating around here somewhere. If I find it, I’ll post a photo.

The green ink smear, albeit minor, would be considered an error if proven to be authentic.

Bought this a long time ago...just to say I have one.

Thanks @SteveInTampa and @alurid for the info. It was printed to show the government what the company was able to do. Very interesting.

I guessing to test or show a different picture of a note that could have been? Pretty cool,

There is a whole collecting niche devoted to test notes. Roland Rollins, who edits the "Catalog of Printers' Test Notes" (now in its 14th edition) administers a website focusing on them and actively posts about them here.
