So, I want to pick up a 1oz 2014 AGE proof. I was going to buy the full set...but I don't think I can afford it. You see, I want to buy one each year that I have a child born. My wife and I are expecting our first child in July and I thought it would be a neat tradition if I bought one for each child the year they were born.

I was looking at the mint website and last year the 1oz proof was just over $1500 and the full 4 coin set was around $2700. I assume they price these based on the value of gold plus a premium. Is there any way to estimate what a 2014 will cost so I can know what to expect to pay and save the money? It says they are due to be released on 3/31/14.

I would guess $1500 will be about right.
You could buy a really cool Matte Proof Lincoln with that same money.;)

Congratulations on the new member of your family, and good luck. I hear HSN has some really spectacular deals on AGEs and everyone knows that they will be worth five grand next year :). But yes, the mint price fluctuates with the price of gold. They do add a premium, but it is pretty reasonable.

A 2014 one ounce Buffalo Proof would be a unique alternative !

About the same price as the AGE.

I thought about that...but I like the AGE design better and I like that it is the original US bullion gold coin. I only wish they started making them 1 year earlier in my birth year.

The first year I bought a AGE set was 1988 with the Roman Numerials.

LOL, I know I'm just a kid. It's funny because every member of my staff is far older than me. They all talk about going to school in the 80s...the other day one of them said she had graduated high school in 1985. Then she look's at me and says..."wait, weren't you born around then?"

Fell in the notch. A year later you could have a AGE, a year earlier you could have the last year of the US gold art medallions. (The US governments first answer to the people wanting to buy gold bullion coins and buying large numbers of Kruggerands, the one oz and half oz gold art medallions.)

I know...I was born in the most boring year of US coinage. No silver, no gold,...no nothing. Just mint and proof sets. :(

What is up with the fractional gold eagle proofs ? They are not that rare...tens of thousands made every year, sometimes 6-figures. Yet I see them going for premiums up to 500% on HA and Ebay.

Do some collectors really need to have every fractional American Eagle even though it's a modern coin ? I understand paying up if you collect MSDs or Saints and want every year and mint mark. But why care if you have the 1/10th or 1/4 oz. proof ?

Why not? People like what they like.

But also they're very popular because more people can afford those than a full ounce at a time.

Guess it must be so. Just insane. Look, I've bought a few fractionals but I think the most I paid was like 45% or so for a 1/20th ounce China panda. It was like an extra $20 or so.

But here you have people paying hundreds or even thousands -- they could afford or almost afford to buy a regular 1 oz.'er !!
