Greetings all! I am new to coin collecting. I stick mostly to stamps (pun intended). However I was told I have in a safety deposit box back home this set: "American Eagle Set Mint Condition 1987" (Gold, I think) But I have been unable to find this set anywhere in the universe! I have searched the forums here to no avail. I am wondering if it goes by another name. Or just even where to find anymore information on it than the name. Can anyone help me? I do not have a picture of the set, I apologize, for it is in a lock box in Tampa. I will post a picture as soon as I can! Much love, analog
I know it's 1987, date in Roman Numerals. I'm not sure what is on the front. My sister has an identical set. I am trying to get more information on it from her. I will keep you posted! Thanks for the pictures. I will reference them, and post my own, when I get eyes (or pics) on the set. Thanks!
No mint stamp found?! It's in my hands: U.S. Gold Eagle Set 4 coins: (1) 1 oz. $50 (1) .5 oz. $25 (1) .25 oz. $10 (1) .10 oz. $5 I have looked for the mint it came from, but the mint mark is no where to be found. Usually found in the lower right of the obverse face, either "P" for Philadelphia or "W" for West Point. But there is no such mark on any of the coins, obverse nor reverse. Date confirmed 1987. Any thoughts?
Yes, krispy, I actually found that site while looking for the mint mark. But trust me, there is not mint mark. Not on any of the coins in the set. Taking photos now.
Let me know if you wana trade those for some stamps..... ive got tons and tons of them and I dont like stamps one bit!
I guess I'm not sure, based on your questions so far, if you know the difference between the proof and uncirculated versions of Eagle coins, as well as the difference of uncirculated bullion versions of the same designs. Do your coins have highly polished mirror-like surfaces or not? Is there a small card, a Certificate of Authenticity, that came with the set? That will provide you with specifications about the coins. I'm not sure what sort of information you are looking for about these coins and why you can't find any information about them as the modern Eagle coins are widely known about and information is readily available about them here on CT and across the web. You might also get more accurate info by posting a photo of the set/coins. Close up images of the coins would help as well.
I was trying to find which set I had locked away across the state. I hadn't been able to find the exact set (online) until now. Now that I have it in my hands, I am trying to find the current value of the set. Posting pictures in a few. I have seen this set with the mint marking. I know that some before 1980 did not carry a mint marking. But this is 1987. I am new to coin knowledge, so please forgive any naivety or ignorance.
No, it's great to ask questions. Just didn't want to insult your knowledge if you knew more than you were letting on thus far. Check eBay completed auctions and the numismedia price guide I haven't seen the set listed on numismedia but you can price out the various individual coins there somewhat accurately.
These are NOT Proof Eagles. These are the unc bullion, no mint mark and not the collectible versions from the US Mint but rather are the bullion coins assembled into a set by a secondary market dealer. Those are uncirculated gold coins. You can tell because of the lack of mirrorlike appearance in the fields. The $50 coin is going for around 2x spot, or price per ounce of gold. The others are their fractional amounts of the 1 oz. If you wanted to sell that set, and they are genuine Mint issue coins, you could probabley get around $5,000 - $6500 for the entire set.
What? For bullion gold Eagles from 1987? REALLY? Where? The price you cite doesn't add up according to Numismedia figures. Even TPG graded examples of the $50 coin from dealers like MCM and Apmex hover in MS69/70 grades of $1200 - $1800. Spot as of this moment is approx. $1,137/oz. The entire 4 coin sets in Proof from MintProducts.com are only listed at $3,280 for any year between 1987-2007. Please do explain your $5k-$6k figure based on the OPs coins.
Current price of gold is $1136.00 per ounce. Check some online auction sites. I've seen $50 gold coins, Buffalos, Eagles, St. Gaudens listing for around $2000.00. Here's 1999 MS-70 UNC Eagle listing on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/1999-NGC-MS70-50-GOLD-AMERICAN-EAGLE_W0QQitemZ200457501027QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item2eac32b963 BIN, for $2150.00 And yours is 12 years older than the one in the listing.
DollarCollector you need some more gold coin education and to do much more reading before tossing out the $5k and $6k figure like you did for the OPs coins... I'm well aware of the price of gold and other PMs, and even cited it for you in my previous post when questioning your figures. I am also aware of online auction prices for all of the coins you deferred to but you didn't answer me in regards to the OP's 1987 bullion AGEs as to why they are worth $5k-$6k, which for less than 2 oz of gold are worth approximately a little over spot but nothing near those prices you gave! Their value can depend upon their condition if selling them to a collector vs a bullion dealer or individual bullion investor, but you can be sure that no bullion dealer will pay that for these bullion coins and most all knowledgeable gold coin collectors won't either as they are just bullion issues. If you understood what Numismedia.com was and how they arrived at their figures then you'd know why their prices for each specific coin they track are generally accepted as Fair Market Value. You need to learn the difference between bullion coins and collectors versions, raw coins and TPG graded coins, and how grades and mintage figures can impact coin prices. Certainly, you will find all kinds of prices for different coins but you need to know the reasons why, for instance, 1 oz. Buffalos are currently priced at what they are compared to the 1987 AGEs in the OPs set. The age of the coin has nothing to do with value either. Go do some reading and try again...
Who the hell are you and what is with that crappy attitude? First, second, and finally: I've seen those sets sell for anywhere between $5000 - $6500 online and in local auctions as a set.
