Ok....so, the only way to obtain the reverse proof will be through this set, correct? So what does everyone think about future prices of the set now that they slowed down in selling? Will they sell for more than issue price?

I sure hope so. I'm in for two. However, one is for my set so I doubt I will sell it. I was hoping to sell the other one to offset some of the price for the first one.

New Uncirculated American Eagles Available September 28
in United States Mint 2006 Holiday Collection

WASHINGTON — The United States Mint’s annual catalog – the 2006 Holiday Collection – not only celebrates history with the American Buffalo Proof Coin, the 20th Anniversary Eagle Sets, and the San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Coins, but also makes history with the introduction of American Eagle Uncirculated Coins in silver, gold and platinum.

"The diverse product offerings in our 2006 Holiday Collection are certain to please collectors, American history lovers, and others who are looking for fine quality gifts," said United States Mint Director Edmund C. Moy.

Struck on specially burnished blanks, the American Eagle Uncirculated Coins feature a finish similar to their bullion counterparts, but carry the "W" mint mark reflecting their striking at the United States Mint at West Point. Each coin is encapsulated in plastic and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

The American Eagle Gold and Silver Uncirculated Coins bear the same designs as their bullion and proof counterparts. The platinum version features the same obverse design found on the proof and bullion coins, but the reverse displays the design featured on the reverse of the 2006 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin – a design honoring the Legislative Branch of our national government.

Priced at the relative mid-point between the American Eagle Proof Coins and the American Eagle Bullion Coins, the one-ounce American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins sell for $720.00; the 1/2-ounce for $375.00; the 1/4-ounce for $190.00; the 1/10-ounce for $85.00; and the four-coin gold uncirculated set for $1,350.

The one-ounce American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coin sells for $1,390.00; the 1/2-ounce for $720.00; the 1/4-ounce for $390.00; the 1/10-ounce for $180.00; and the four-coin platinum uncirculated set for $2,585. The one-ounce American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin sells for $19.95.

Included in the United States Mint 2006 Holiday Collection are the following products:

San Francisco Old Mint Commemorative Coin Program – This program features a $5 gold proof and uncirculated coin, as well as a proof and uncirculated silver dollar

2006 United States Mint American Legacy Collection™, containing a proof "Founding Father" Benjamin Franklin Commemorative Silver Dollar and a proof San Francisco Old Mint Silver Dollar, as well as proof versions of all 2006-dated circulating coins.

I wish I purchased the 3 piece gold set because they will not make additional reverse proof gold coins this year. I feel the mint lost the trust of a lot of collectors with their minting additional gold unc 1 ounce gold coins!!

The mint is not suppose to mint any more reverse proof silver dollars this year. I think the maximum mintage for the set is 250,000. If they don't sell out by the end of the year I don't believe they can sell any more.

There's something that a lot of collectors don't realize - the US Mint absolutely hates to create a rarity. They will go out of their way and spend a ton of money to prevent this from happening. But every now n then they make a mistake and do create one. I think that is what has happened this time.

In years to come, I have little doubt that these 3 coin sets, or the individual Reverse Proof coins, will sell for substantial premiums. But hey, I've been wrong before - might be again.

Well GD, You are the one that posts in many topics and you seem to be VERY knowledgable...I will put my faith in you and not cancel my order for 10 of these sets....I'm hoping they will be worth substantially more than issue but as long as they're $100+ I'm not going to complain :)

I just recieved my 3 coin gold set and love the reverse proof coin. I believe the silver reverse proof is going to be very nice also. I did order the 10 sets and believe they will go up in value because of the reverse proof coin.
To me 250 thousand isnt that many, I thought they would have already sold out. The marine silver proof sold 600,000 and they have about doubled.

    the mint and their marketing

    Howdy,

Yeah, I ordered several of the 3 coin sets, and bought a couple of buffalo proofs.

I guess I just basically don't trust the mint very much. It seems that making money off of us is their main goal - and I agree they hate to create rarities.

That said, it seems like every year something happens between the leap and the saddle and some rarity occurs. The last couple it was the Marine Corps $ and this year you've got Uncle Ben - both 3 baggers right out of the gate. 1999 saw the silver proof set for the silver quarters and 2001 saw the Sac $ cause a runnup.

Sometimes it's fairly easy to spot the winners and sometimes it's simply the luck (or badluck) of the draw. The 2004 mint set because they had to switch to mint something else and stopped minting early . . .

I try to buy a few of most everything they mint each year - myself and my hope chest, my grand kids, and perhaps one for giggles.

But this upcoming pres $ dollar series is simply a marketing scam. - perhaps I'll just wait and buy the First Strikes off of TV?!? teehehe,

    peace,

    rono

for the cost of 10 sets you can get a very nice Saint... and a couple of the 3 coin silver sets to boot.why bother buying ten sets just to get a saint?
unless you are looking for a high relief... if so the silver sets are going to have to go up a LOT
    ;)

Personally, I could care less what happens to the value of the sets. I purchased several sets and all but 1 will be going as Xmas gifts.

lol....well, I'm hoping that they will go up even a little...then I can at least have a little money extra for the St. Gaudens, and possibly have more to put back into my account...lol

I liekd the set a lot better before they decided to sell the Unc. coin singly. Now we are looking at a proof and unc. selling separately for a totoal of almost $50, which means the reverse proof is selling for $50 in the set. Was going to order one ro two more of the 3 coin sets, but will have to reconsider now.

Well said, most anyone into coin collecting to make money is bound for disappointment sooner or later, and likely sooner.

i see some similarties in the reverse proof and the 2001 buffalo comm. both about the same mintage. 100 bucks per set, all it needs to do is double in a few years to be a good investment. in my mind there is little doubt of this especailly as hot as the gold set is going to be. a lot more people will be after the silver sets
