i want to add a coin from the 1700's (any kind) to my collection, i only want the coin to be at least recognizable with the date readable on it. also under $200 (if possible?)

what kind of coin(s) will fit that description

    A 1798 large cent

I believe a 1798 large cent is the most affordable coin from that era. You should be able to get one in VG condition for that kind of money. Look for a nice, uncorroded planchet.

Do you want a US coin??

I have a world coin from 1792 and I paid under $15 for it....
As long as you don't want a high grade coin you should just look around...you will find a US coin for your price range...

    1700's

State cents might be good for you. You can pick them up for under 200.00 probably well under.

I just bought a 1783 Washington & Independence "Unity" Cent in about VG-10 for $100. Not perfect, but still a neat coin.

    vision,
I had exactly the same wish as you,to have at least one or two readable date late 1700's US coin but my budget was less than yours.I think I paid $35-40 for the cent and maybe $70 for the Connecticut Copper. They ain't pretty but they fit the bill.
You should have no problem, just take your time.
