I wanted opinions on which junk 90% coin is most sought after between halves, quarters, and dimes. I want to know which one to stack and then sell later on. I know preppers like dimes and I would have no problem catering to their needs. But I want to know which would be the best for investing and selling down the line. Thanks for helping and keep stacking my friends!
Personally I like Franklin and Kennedy halves as they are chunky and they still have weight on them. The WL are sometimes too slick. They command a little more X face so I think that may be why more popular.
I agree, on the halves, WL are usually worn and thinner than a nice Frankie or 64 Kennedy. But are halves better to stack for profit down the line then quarters or dimes? We're talking bullion but some numismatic value could come into play for some.
Buying sight unseen you would probably have better luck with Franklins and Kennedys as they likely would not have the wear of Walkers. Buying in person I would rather have the Walkers because I am partial to the design. That just me though. I would be more likely to stack Walkers in Fine or better condition than the others. With the silver melting going on this past year, they are going to be harder to find in the future at some point unless an old codger like me kicks the bucket and they re-enter the system once again.
So there is somewhat of a numismatic variable here. For Myself, I would want the most bang for my buck as far as silver goes by getting coins with little to no wear. So I am talking coins minted in 1964 or close to it. From what I am hearing in this thread is that Halves and Mercs would be the junk 90% of choice to stack and then unload when the time is right. What about quarters?
I have been stacking 90% silver now for over 2 years. I like the Washington Quarters because you only need 40 to fill a roll. But my preference would be the Half Dollars to stack for down the road. I filled one roll of Franklins, JFK's (64's) and Walkers and went to my LCS and he offered me $ 30.00 more for the roll of Walkers than the other 2.
In order: Franklins, Mercuries, Washingtons, Kennedeys, Roosevelts. The Kennedys and Roosevelts are last because they have to be checked: not all are silver. Walkers have a premium went sold but also when bought so it is a wash. Anything earlier has too big a premium in anything better than G.
Does the chance for Full Bell Lines and Full Split Bands increase the premiums on Frankies and Mercs?
That's interesting. What condition were the Walkers? Mine are pretty worn because I found them Coin Roll Hunting.
I doubt that has ever been an issue with coin bought as junk silver. It never occurred to me to look.
I'm sure that we all would/do take whatever is available. If given the choice of spending $1,000 on all of them at the same time, halves would probably win, although if they were all Kennedy halves, I might go for the quarters (or definitely Mercs), so that I could search them. I don't see how/why this choice would change 10 years from now. As previously noted, any premium paid now would probably be made up on the back end.
I see what you're saying. I Coin Roll Hunt Halves so I don't buy those much. I buy a lot of quarters and dimes though. I liked the 63-64 quarters and dimes because they were the least circulated, not worn down of silver. For myself that is what I look for. Would you rather have a roll of Mercs that were worn a little or a nice roll of 64 Rosie's?
I would take the Mercs. Sure, there might be a little less silver, but the amount would be negligible. Maybe one dime's worth, at the most? And low grade Mercs carry double the value of Roosie's, numismatically. Plus, for preppers, a dime is a dime, regardless of condition, for the most part, I believe.
My LCD sells all junk for the same price. He lets me pick what I want. I start with the walkers and only pick the weighty ones. Then I'll pick the weighty mercs. Then I go back to the Franklins and kennedys. I'll take quarters last...although they contain some dateless standings and barbers.
I always grab the walkers first if the price is the same. They typically sell for a premium and I also enjoy collecting them. I usually go for the quarters next bc I can search them for types/varieties. My last group of quarters I ended up with some RPMs, a UNC 64 ( common but still UNC) and a 64 type B Reverse. I'll do the franklins after that. I'm not a big dime guy so I usually go for those last but I'll pick up mercs due to the possibility of finding a higher value coin in the group. Of course I don't typically buy at my LCS because he cherry picks everything, sells the common coins and is priced too high.
In liquidating the Silver Bags portion of my estate over the last 5+ years in lots of $50 face Fine condition coins or better, the most marketable coins in descending order are W.L. Halves, Mercury dimes. Franklin Halves, 1964 Kennedy Halves, Washington Quarters, and Roosevelt Dimes. The coins were generally all being sold on Craigslist at below market pricing, often to buyers from out of state.
My walkers in this particular roll were AG to Good condition. Dates were common no key or semi-key dates.
