I'm not sure about "printed" but for that much it has to be the 1894-S PROOF Barber Dime. The 1894 S silver Barber Dime is one of the rarest and most valuable US coins ever made. During the early part of 1894 there were only 24 proof coins produced at the San Francisco mint that entire year. Only 9 of them are known to still exist. 7 of 9 are uncirculated and 2 are heavily worn. One of those circulated coins was found in an old junk box at Gimbels Department Store and purchased for only $2.40 in 1957. The Mint's superintendent is said to have produced the coins as gifts to prominent bankers. The superintendent's daughter is also said to have received 3 of the rare barber dimes and spent one on ice cream and sold the other two decades later in the 1950s. Each coin is worth between $1 Million and $2 Million - making it one of the most valuable and most sought-after collectible coins. - See more at: http://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/1403/dimes/barber/1894-S/#sthash.LW8YXQqN.dpuf
Dimes don't get much love compared to the other denominations, but this one beats just about all of the big boys.
I just watched, the customer said NGC they could not determine the last digit in date and could validate the coin. Rick said he could not see the last digit in the date and nothing could be done to restore that date. Based on the photo displayed I would not agree with that statement. Although he seen the coin in hand. I think he was pretty sure this was not a real 1894 S Barber Dime. Surprising what an x-ray could do if I had my doubts about this coin. It is surprising what metal density imagining can do these days
if you just created the post.. after you post you can edit. Just hit edit! It appears only under your post
The last digit of that date was definitely not legible. You could squint and imagine something, but it was gone. If you had the time, you could possible compare other diagnostics (such as the position of the S) and try to verify it, but even then it would be dubious.
Egad, and I've actually joked about harshly cleaned coins looking like they've been hit with a Scotch-Brite pad.
That had to be scripted by an ignoramus. Rick (and the others) must not have much control over the show. Rick deals with coins all the time and probably knows the proper terminology. I also think its a 98 and obviously not a 94.
I saw this episode last night in my insomnia fit. It made me grit my teeth. For a multitude of reasons.
I just saw this last night. Id be happy/lucky just to find a barber dime in a garden. My first thought however, wouldnt be "wow its gotta be 1924 s" lol. Also if NGC couldnt verify the date, why bother taking it to pawn stars of all places lol
