I received this coin in change at the grocery store and immediately thought it might be feral proof. Closer examination showed it to be a nice business strike and clearly circulated. But once I put it under the microscope, the strength of the reverse surprised me. I just don't recall ever seeing a business strike Jefferson with such a strong reverse strike. If not for the little gash, this would be a FS coin and the other details of Monticello are completely struck up.

Is this usual for this year or unusual?

It has been normal for Jeffersons to have full steps since they flattened the reverse design in ...I believe it was 1996.

Since most of my purchases are with my VISA, I don't have the opportunity to the 2023 Nickel. Maybe I should go to my bank and ask for a roll of each denomination.

I don’t think it’s unusual in any way. You just have a nickel minted from a new die. They look like this when they mint coins before they start to wear.

Just get a few rolls of nickels. There will most likely be one in there.
