Has anyone weighed their 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars. I am not sure if it is just inconsistency with the mint but every 2021 Morgan and peace dollars I received has weighed right about .87 Troy oz or ~27.1 grams. I know they are supposed to weigh .858 Troy oz. Anyone else seen this?

I knew that, I am just curious as to why they are 27g. I was curious if anyone else has tried weighing them and if they really weighed 26.73g. And if so what would a weight tolerance be? Also the measurements are all spot on being 1.5in/38.1mm diameter. Does anyone know what the tolerances are for the mint coins?

26.73 would have been the original weight of the 1921 dated coins, but remember these 2021 dated coins are .999 fine silver not .900 fine like the originals. Without the copper alloy, silver is a bit denser element. To strike these coins in the original dimensions would result in a bit heavier coin to make up for the less dense copper that is not present.

That makes a lot of sense

They're aiming for that number but they may not end up exactly on that weight. There would probably be more cost in making sure every one hit the number to those tolerances than it would be to just leave the extra weight in them.

0.37 gram heavier amounts to 0.011 of a troy oz. That is about 0.275 per. Might have been a big deal if they were sold for melt but there was plenty of profit to make up for that 0.27 in extra weight. Be thankful they're heavier and not lighter. lol

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

I checked one. 26.71g. So I guess you can consider yourself lucky! LOL. Thought you might find this article interesting (Oct. issue of Numismatist). Due to the higher silver content (and thus heavier weight), the coin had to be made thinner, although imperceptibly so.
